Love it or hate it, the latest movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights has been causing quite a stir! Based on Emily Brontës’s seminal (and only) novel, the iconic tale still captivates almost 200 years after it was first published.
Aside from Cathy and Heathcliff, the star of Wuthering Heights – and its countless screen versions – is its setting: the vast, rolling Yorkshire moors. Characterised by endless skies, tumultuous storms and wild natural landscapes, “they carry on the emotion and light up the meaning of the book,” as Virginia Woolf keenly observed.
Feeling suitably inspired, we’ve created a selection of unique UK retreats that are each surrounded by expansive, soul-stirring vistas to roam. While we’ve included plenty of Yorkshire havens, there’s also plenty of scope to get deliriously lost among ancient, heather-coated Scottish hills, or ramble through the wild Welsh wilderness at your leisure.
Whichever setting you choose, you can do just as the characters do. Bound, leap… explore nature by “rolling over banks, and wading through marshes” – yet blissfully free of their crippling inner dramas! Instead, you’ll return home feeling energised and alive, ready to dive headfirst into spring.
