The Isle of Carna
Scotland / Loch Sunart, The Highlands
Full description
Cast yourself away to your very own private Scottish island, teeming with native wildlife and boasting 600 blissful acres of fresh, tranquil luxury.
The Isle of Carna is a very special island indeed. Family owned and run, grandly historic, blissfully private and with absolutely no digital distractions, there is simply no better place to escape to when the stresses of a life spent constantly online starts to get you down! You can even bring the dogs along, too.
Surrounded by the refreshing coastal waters of Loch Sunart on the west coast of Scotland, you'll benefit from an amazingly unspoilt, largely uninhabited natural vista as far as the eye can see. With no roads, no traffic, and just three houses privately situated on the 600-acre Isle of Carna, you'll feel as though the whole island belongs to you alone. Well...along with the abundant wildlife, that is ...
Many species of the local wildlife found on the Isle of Carna are protected, benefiting from the passionate conservation projects run by the island's owners. Thriving with biodiversity, you can expect to enjoy a whole host of beautiful foliage, wildflower meadows, heather moorland and diverse species of wildlife that includes otters, eagles and riotously colourful butterflies to name but a few.
Luxuriate in the Atlantic Oakwoods, rich peatland, hills and burns (that's "rivers" in Scottish) as you explore your stunning natural surroundings, perhaps scaling the 550ft summit if you're feeling particularly energetic.
Two of the island's three houses are available for you and your favourite group of people to choose from during your stay, both providing the perfect setting for the ultimate digital detox (the friendly island team maintain a 24 hour radio link to the mainland in case of emergency). You'll be provided with and trained to use a self-drive boat, to make exploring your surroundings that much easier - not to mention much more fun.
Carna House is a period 1920s cottage that sleeps up to eight people. Full of warmly authentic touches including a crackling log fire, you'll feel as though you've been transported blissfully back in time as you listen to the gentle sounds of the sea, cradling a steaming mug of coffee.
Discover a double bedroom, two twins and a bunk room, along with a roomy shower and bathroom. You'll find everything you need to prepare deliciously hearty meals in the kitchen with gas stove, and the spacious garden is the ideal place to sit and catch up on life with the people you love the most, with no phones or TV to distract you.
Carna Cottage is an original farmer's ‘Blackhouse' that has been lovingly restored into a comfortable holiday home, sleeping up to six people and fully equipped with cosy creature comforts. A welcoming conservatory doubles as a superb viewing platform for wildlife watching, as otters hunt and eagles perch nearby in full view.
You'll find two comfy bedrooms inside the cottage, along with a lounge complete with wood burning stove, and a family-sized bathroom. A kitchen dining room makes light work of sociable cooking and eating, and in the evenings why not head outside to enjoy a sizzling barbecue, then gaze at the Milky Way in the clear, unpolluted sky? On certain nights the Aurora Borealis - otherwise known as the Northern Lights - can even be seen, for a real occasional treat!
You'll soon find that living digital-free on a secluded island for a while is anything but dull. Vast opportunities for outdoor adventure await you right outside your door, as you take a guided walk, ramble through the hillsides (perhaps accompanied by a picnic), discover original archaeology, head for the beach, luxuriate in the secret coves and sparkling waterfalls, or simply launch your own watery expeditions by boat.
Wildlife watching is taken to a whole new level on the Isle of Carna, so don't forget your camera as you observe the natural habitats of whales, seals, dolphins, roe deer, foxes, pine martens - and even the odd Golden Eagle - on your travels.
If you decide to venture to the mainland, you'll find plenty to captivate your attention, from ornamental gardens, golf, ancient castles to explore...and even The Jacobite, the historic steam railway made famous by the ‘Harry Potter' films.
So don't delay, because with so much waiting for you on your private Isle of Carna, you and your loved ones will want to return again and again.
Things to note
No smoking permitted, up to 3 well-behaved dogs are allowed in both properties with a surcharge of £15 per dog to cover cleaning, the island is not suitable for children under 2, the island does not have conventional electric power and there is limited supply - ideal for a digital detox.
