America isn’t known as "the land of endless possibilities" for nothing! Holiday-wise, the American Dream is a long and inspiring one, featuring everything from beaches to snow-covered mountains, buzzing cities with innovative cuisine, to redwood forests, jagged canyons and enormous star-filled skies – not to mention the many varied and extraordinary accommodation options on offer.
Search through the fifty states, and it’s easy to reel off the names of some of America’s most popular cities. Let’s start with the bright lights of Las Vegas and star-studded LA, while the "windy city" of Chicago carries connotations of old-time glamour and iconic architecture.
New York, the capital, is a bucket-list destination for many – who could resist indulging in hot dogs and hamburgers, before strolling through Central Park, or jumping in a yellow cab and heading for the Empire State Building?
How about a spell of jazz in musical New Orleans, or immersing yourself in the waterfront charms of San Francisco (flowers in your hair optional)? City-wise, America certainly spoils travellers rotten, and with a truly rich, diverse heritage of art, culture, literature and music – the USA is the birthplace of hip-hop, country, Motown and funk, after all! – you could spend decades holidaying here, discovering something brand-new every time.
Of course, you might prefer a good ol’ American road trip! What better way to view mountain peaks, the hillsides of the Great Plains, Arizona’s explosions of stars, or the stretched country lanes of New England? Four million miles of highways throughout the USA will lead you through iconic ‘blue highways’, red rock deserts and swamplands that will make you feel as though you’re starring in a big-budget movie.
Foodie-wise, just like everything else, you’re spoilt for choice. Head to Texas for authentic barbecue ribs, while Manhattan’s Upper West Side is famous for its bagels and lox. Order coffee and pancakes in a 1950s’ diner and sample fresh lobster in Maine, while if it’s street food trucks you’re after, Portland is home to some of the best, with just about every nationality represented (think Romanian chimney cakes, Egyptian koshari and Colombian arepas!)
California is famed for its wine, and if you’ve ever watched ‘Frasier’, you’ll know Seattle is serious about coffee, so head here for the best brew – and pay a visit to the iconic Space Needle while you’re there.
If you’re bringing the kids, Disneyworld Florida is an obvious must-visit, while Miami South Beach is loved for a reason (though if it’s stunning beach scenery and hula dancing you’re after, Hawaii simply can’t be beaten).
With this vast country offering something to suit every holiday taste, we recommend you make the most of your time spent in the Land of the Free!
