A bespoke Somerset sanctuary, The Orchard at Fenny Castle expertly blends five-star comfort with the timeless beauty of nature.

Nestled in a private arboretum filled with rare tree species, surrounded by open farmland, and characterised by a shimmering, wildlife-rich duck pond, it’ll be extremely hard to believe you’re just two hours away from London.

Better still, the three romantic, adults-only havens you’ll discover here – two hand-crafted treehouses and a sumptuous cabin – are filled with welcoming warmth. Each one represents a genuine labour of love from the friendly family owners; a close-knit, detail-oriented team who will see to it that your stay is a remarkable one.

Dabinett Treehouse soars into the canopy of whispering trees, in a way that harks back to carefree childhood days… only now with a little added luxury!

There’s an indulgent bathtub out on the deck (if you’d rather freshen up inside, don’t worry: there’s also a drench shower and a flushing loo) and a cosy wood-burner to accompany snuggly evenings in front of the TV. Greet the morning with a Nespresso coffee, as you gaze across the stirring Somerset Levels – a wonderful way to start the day.

Set amongst the pine trees, Pomeroy Treehouse boasts handcrafted stairs and a quirky trap door, with glistening floor-to-ceiling windows to keep you captivated by those endless country views.

But that’s not all. Outside awaits actual al fresco heaven, in the form of a well-equipped outdoor kitchen (there’s one inside, too), a Finnish electric sauna, and a grand bathtub-for-two with an air spa system. You can also ascend to a spectacular willow-flanked roof terrace with an outdoor TV, a gas firepit… and even a dumb waiter to help transport those essential evening snacks!

More information

Vilberie Cabin, meanwhile, cuts a striking dash amongst historic woods that were once a cider orchard (‘Vilberie’ refers to a traditional Somerset apple). A curved, cosy pod of dreams, there’s an enormous stone tub to soak in – sheltered in its very own roundhouse with a stargazing skylight above – and a beautiful viewing deck that showcases the Somerset Levels to perfection.

If you can tear yourselves away from your new-found paradise, simply walking or cycling through your soul-soothing surroundings (Dutch vintage bikes are on hand to borrow) is a magnificent way to while away some time, especially if you’ve brought your binoculars for wildlife-watching.

Take a longer walk on the breath-taking Mendip Hills, or a shorter stroll to the Fenny Castle vineyard – just seven minutes away. A few more steps, and you’ll reach the nearest pub. Or wander through the lanes to the local goat farm in Wookey, where you can sample delectable milk and cheeses, and of course, pet the goats!

Slightly further afield lie the charms of Wells and Glastonbury, which means you’ll have an almost endless choice of ways to spend your days, until it’s time to toast another glorious sunset from your deck.
