As a child, did you ever dream of having your very own cinema? Not just a big screen, but a proper cinema, with a foyer, folding seats and a 1950s cocktail bar? (Well, maybe you didn’t dream of that last bit!) If so, now is your time to make it a reality with a fun-filled family or group stay at Number 36 and The Roxy.
Based in a former coaching inn in Axbridge, Number 36 and The Roxy are the product of years of painstaking yet loving renovation, after the inn (which served the town for over 200 years) fell into a derelict state. Today, groups of up to nine can enjoy truly stunning self-catering accommodation at Number 36, with the added bonus of the use of The Roxy – a small but perfectly formed cinema!
The Roxy began as a non-profit community venue for locals to enjoy, but since the Covid pandemic, rising insurance costs have sadly prevented it from reopening to the public. Lucky guests at Number 36 can now enjoy sole use of the cinema themselves – what an experience!
With 36 original seats sourced from an old theatre in Bristol, as well as period fixtures and fittings, The Roxy makes a cosy and intimate viewing space for friends and family to enjoy. Select a film from top streaming services, or bring your own DVDs or Blu-Rays to watch. You can even stream films from your mobile device. This really is a wonderfully memorable way to celebrate a special gathering; how about watching the wedding video to mark that important anniversary, or maybe the old home videos for a family reunion?
And with double bedrooms Number 36 is the perfect place for such an event. Each room is decorated in its own original way, blending antique and vintage furniture with contemporary fixtures and fittings. Intriguing and creative touches give this house its unique character, where wooden floors, dream bathrooms and vibrant colour schemes combine to make this a truly memorable place to stay. The owners are artists and furniture makers, and you can see their work throughout the house. Solar panels installed by the owners give the property some eco credentials.
Beside the bedrooms, guests can also relax in the 4000-book library, or the large open-plan living area, complete with a kitchen and pool table that converts into a table tennis table or very large dining table. The kitchen has been beautifully designed, and even comes complete with seating for nine people and a 1930s marble sink sourced from an Italian fish shop! Outside, a charming walled courtyard makes for long summer evenings spent barbecuing and dining al fresco. Behind the house is a walled garden, where you’re most likely to bump into your hosts for a chat about the dahlias.
And as if it couldn’t get any more perfect, Number 36 and The Roxy is situated in the most heavenly location ideal for nature lovers who love nothing more than to get immersed in the Great Outdoors. With the Mendip Hills just behind and the Somerset Levels in front, this is ideal walking and cycling country, and from the top of the house and the garden, you can even spy Glastonbury Tor. Two miles away is Cheddar, with its magnificent caves, gorge and cheese, and a 20 minute-drive west takes you to the seaside, while the same distance east takes you to the stunning cathedral city of Wells. Incredible nature reserves provide the ideal places to see wildlife – for example the stunning starling murmurations that take place between October and March; a true sight to behold!
