Number 36 and The Roxy
A stylishly converted Georgian coaching inn with its own art deco 36-seater cinema.
As a child, did you ever dream of having your very own cinema? Not just a big screen, but a proper cinema, with a foyer, folding seats and a 1950s cocktail bar? (Well, maybe you didn't dream of that last bit!) If so, now is your time to make it a reality with a stay at Number 36 and The Roxy.
Based in a former coaching inn in Axbridge, Number 36 and The Roxy are the product of years of painstaking yet loving renovation, after the inn (which served the town for over 250 years) fell into a derelict state. Today, groups of up to 12 can enjoy truly stunning self-catering accommodation at Number 36, with the added bonus of the use of The Roxy - a small but perfectly formed cinema!
The Roxy began as a non-profit community venue for locals to enjoy, and is now part of the cultural life of Axbridge. Run by volunteers, The Roxy screens a programme of eclectic films for locals throughout the year, mainly on Friday nights and some Thursdays, but always on Saturdays - and when not in use on other days, guests at Number 36 can enjoy sole use of the cinema themselves.
With 36 original seats, sourced from nearby Bristol's Colston Hall, as well as period fixtures and fittings, The Roxy makes a cosy and intimate viewing space for friends and family to enjoy. Select a film from the extensive library, or bring your own DVDs or Blu-Rays to watch. This really is a wonderfully memorable way to celebrate a special gathering; how about watching the wedding video to mark that important anniversary, or maybe the old home videos for a family reunion?
And with four double bedrooms (including one king size) and a single room, Number 36 is the perfect place for such an event. Each room is decorated in its own original way, blending antique and vintage furniture with contemporary fixtures and fittings. A hat box collection in the single room, a 1930s cabinet of curios in the large double room, family portraits in another double room - these are a tiny selection of the intriguing and creative touches that give this house its unique character, where wooden floors, open fireplaces and calming colour schemes create a classy yet comfortable feel throughout.
Beside the bedrooms, guests can also relax in the 4000-book library, or the large open-plan living area, complete with a kitchen and pool table that converts into a table tennis table or very large dining table. The kitchen has been beautifully designed, and even comes complete with seating for nine people and a 1930s marble sink sourced from an Italian fish shop! Outside, a charming walled courtyard makes for long summer evenings spent barbecuing and dining al fresco.
And as if it couldn't get any more perfect, Number 36 and The Roxy are situated in the most heavenly location. With the Mendip Hills just behind and the Somerset Levels in front, this is ideal walking and cycling country, and from the top of the house and the garden, you can even spy Glastonbury Tor. Two miles away is Cheddar, with its magnificent caves, gorge and cheese, and a 20 minute-drive west takes you to the seaside, while the same distance east takes you to the stunning cathedral city of Wells.
There's no reason why you can't simply spend your time in Axbridge however; with its friendly, village-y feel, you'll soon understand the draw of the place to visitors. Numerous pubs, a tea house and even a tiny museum are ready to be explored and enjoyed, while children will love the opportunity to play on the local playground and football field.
In all, it's easy to see why Number 36 and The Roxy have been featured in the media and remain so popular with guests. The eclectic blend of antique meets vintage meets modern - combined with the truly one-off private cinema and perfect location - makes for a unique stay to remember.
