A former Devon coastguard and signal house, transformed into a charming coastal retreat on Beer Head’s breathtakingly scenic clifftops, within strolling distance of the secluded Hooken Beach.
  • Sleeps: 4 (+2)
  • Bedrooms: 2
  • Bathroom: 1
  • Minimum stay: 3-4 nights

The Signal House has assumed many guises over past centuries – as a shelter for livestock, a coastguard and signal house, and even a Customs and Excise office… complete with records of former smugglers-turned-officers!

Occupying prime position atop Beer Head’s dramatic cliffs, the intriguing building has since been transformed into a charming and luxurious Devon coastal retreat for up to four guests. Savour the most magnificent views from Portland Bill to Start Point, in a magical, windswept escape from everyday life.

This is a retreat that’s particularly perfect for all-weather breaks. There’s underfloor heating and a log-burner for welcome warmth on chilly days, and an elevated patio for lazy summer evening barbecues. The private lawned area at the front is ideal for morning coffee-with-a-view, too.

Whip up feasts and snacks galore in the fully-equipped, natural light-flooded kitchen, where high-end appliances include a Quooker tap and a bean-to-cup coffee machine. There’s also plenty of room to chat with the designated chef at the breakfast island, glass of wine in hand!

One of the two elegant double bedrooms can be made into a twin on request, and there’s an occasional pull-out bed in the lounge, for flexibility that means a small family, two couples, or a group of friends can be easily accommodated.

The owners have also added some helpful facilities for guests with reduced mobility, including a ramp to the main door, wheelchair-friendly doors inside and out, and a wet room rather than a shower cubicle. Oh, and since The Signal House is a single-level retreat, there are no pesky stairs to navigate, either.

What to do with your days? You could be forgiven for staying put and simply feasting your eyes on that glorious, ever-changing scenery… taking in that mesmerising coast to the south, and soothing green farmland to the north.
