The most north-westerly village in the British mainland, Durness is rich in the magnificent natural beauty that truly defines the Scottish Highlands. Think dramatic coastal landscapes, abundant wildlife, and vast wide-open spaces that re-energise your soul.

You’ll find The Cabin at Mackay’s right here; a luxuriously quirky, dog-friendly retreat for couples friends, or small families to cosy up in… or use as a base for exploring this truly incredible part of the world.

Inside, attention to the tiniest detail reigns supreme, with butter-soft furnishings and well-chosen accessories all contributing to the laid-back, modern-industrial vibe throughout.

There’s a wood-fired stove that’s perfect for warming up after windswept rambles across pristine Atlantic beaches. Toasty underfloor heating, wood facing, and mood-adjustable lighting creates an irresistibly snuggly atmosphere to lounge in – if there’s a storm brewing outside, so much the better!

The kitchen, meanwhile, is lovingly hand-built in a stylish mix of copper and black. Owners Fiona and Robbie are keen foodies themselves, so they’ve seen to it that every tool and appliance you could want has been provided… including a large fridge and a slimline dishwasher to take good care of the clearing-up.

(Why not order some delectable local produce to elevate your meals from tasty to indulgently mouth-watering? Fiona and Robbie will be more than happy to help you source whatever you need in advance of your stay… just ask).

When it’s time for bed, you’ll have two elegant bedrooms to choose from. One features a gorgeous handmade kingsize bed to curl up in, and the other downy twin beds, all feather-topped and dressed in fine French linens for a sound night’s sleep.

What the guests of The Cabin at Mackay’s say

“This year my 2 week stay in the Cabin was everything that I needed – first class comfort and loved the location opposite the shop on a wee hill with a great view of the sea beyond. Easy to work smart TV, cooking facilities, very comfortable beds and sheets and a log burner for those days when it’s colder and rainy. Fiona and Robbie are available and very willing to respond to any requests.”

“Beautifully designed and well thought-out, the Cabin is a spacious, cosy and comfortable new-build, with excellent beds, a stylish shower and a well-equipped, high-end kitchen. The owner, Fiona, was on hand to provide all the information we needed. A lot of time and effort has clearly gone in to making the Cabin a very high-quality option for those wanting to spend time in Durness, which is blessed with stunning beaches and a thriving artistic community.”

“The Cabin: we absolutely loved this stunningly appointed wooden cabin. Decked out in industrial lights and bold furniture it was so beautiful and quirky, it was spotless and we had everything we needed. It was the little details here that made a difference like pale pink linen sheets (smelling of fresh air after line drying on the hill), the wood burner being loaded and ready to go, crockery made by a local potter, the huge SMEG fridge…..”
