Off Grid Travel is an intrepid team of nature travel experts, who design and craft ‘healthy’ retreats in idyllic natural settings. Their approach combines sustainable technology with luxurious comfort, for a zero-carbon stay that’s both relaxed and indulgent.

The Bothy is an imaginative, completely off-grid haven for up to four guests and their dogs, lovingly crafted from sustainable Scottish timber and dreamily nestled on the vast Cambo Estate in the East Neuk of Fife. A car-free site, the retreat is a 350-metre walk from the guest parking area, with wagons provided for your luggage.

Surrounded by pure, timeless nature, there’s ample private woodland space to revel in, along with beautiful views out to the coast… a perfect recipe for blissful relaxation. The Off Grid Travel team have also seen to it that every facility and convenience you could possibly need is included, at no cost to the planet.

Solar power provides lighting and electricity, while the wood-burning stove will keep everyone toasty on cooler evenings. You’ll also have a ‘proper’ flushing toilet, with towels and eco-toiletries that mean you can pack perfectly light.

Simply choose your favourite sleeping nook, both furnished with a double bed dressed in luxury eco-bedding, a window for sublime morning views, and pure woollen blinds for privacy. There’s plenty of sociable living space to unwind in all together, along with a well-equipped kitchen, and a large shower room for freshening up after a day at the beach.

Meanwhile, al fresco treats include a double hammock for summertime snoozing, a picnic blanket for al fresco feasting, and a 7m-high tipi with seating for storytelling around the evening firepit. Organic tea and coffee are provided, too, for that essential morning cuppa enjoyed against a reviving backdrop of birdsong.

If you don’t feel like leaving The Bothy – which would be completely understandable! – you can order fresh local produce from Ardross Farm Shop, just a few miles away, and not move so much as a muscle.

More information

Yet if you do feel like exploring, you won’t be at a loss for ways to spend your time. The Cambo Estate is peppered with enchanting walking and cycling trails that lead to myriad delights. Perhaps you’ll visit the estate’s peaceful walled gardens, before enjoying tea and cake in the on-site café. Or maybe you’d prefer a tour of Kingsbarns Distillery, a mere 10-minute stroll from The Bothy, where you can sample unique whiskies and gins.

If you do like to be beside the seaside, follow the signs to Kingsbarns Beach, where you can arrange a wild sauna experience if the mood should strike! From here, you can join the Fife Coastal Path for a longer walk – ideal if you’ve brought your dog along.

And of course, it almost goes without saying that there’s plenty of opportunity for golf in this fine part of the world! There’s a plethora of courses to choose from, and you can walk to the first tee of Kingsbarns Golf Links – part of the estate – directly from The Bothy.

Things to note

Please advise on booking if you plan to bring your dog/s, so the owners can prepare for your arrival. The Bothy is fully solar-powered, so please think about leaving electronic devices and hairdryers at home (NB – there are no issues with charging of tablets, laptops and phones). There is no Wi-Fi in the retreat (Wi-Fi is available in the estate’s café, next to the guest parking area, which is just under 350m from The Bothy). Please bring wellies or suitable footwear for navigating the footpaths, which can get muddy!

What the guests of The Bothy by Off Grid Travel say

“The Bothy was more than I had hoped for. It is beautifully designed with every stylish and comfortable detail assessed for its environmental impact. So well insulated, there was no need to use any heating in November. Its in a perfect spot, backed onto mature woodlands facing a wide horizon for sunrise and the sea in the distance, though you can walk to a beach in 15 minutes.”
