Originally built to traverse the wide, bustling Dutch waterways back in the 1950s, the Adrianto is an elegant and spacious barge, remodelled as a stylish houseboat and permanently moored at Pin Mill, an outrageously pretty Suffolk coastal hamlet.

You’ll find the Adrianto in a peaceful and romantic location on the edge of woodlands – maintained by the National Trust – and with shimmering views over the River Orwell. Step aboard, however, and you may well find the interior scenery even more captivating!

Expertly styled by the owner, who is a curator of art and design, you’ll marvel at the authentic vintage pieces and mid-century furnishings throughout – accented by vibrant colours and complemented by desirable holiday facilities.

With its glorious river views, the plant-festooned private jetty is ideal for watching the comings and goings of the abundant local wildlife – and for morning coffee and evening tipples alike.

From the jetty you board the Adrianto via her wheelhouse, and take a few steps down into the large, light-filled living space. This open-plan area includes: a very well-equipped kitchen (yes, there’s a dishwasher); a huge dining table to break bread around; as well as squishy sofas and a TV for those cosy evenings.

Further along awaits a master bedroom with a downy king-size bed, along an additional cabin with two single beds. The Adrianto sleeps up to four guests in total, and is perfect for a small family, or for two couples looking for a stylish and sociable retreat.

Indulgent bathroom facilities are on hand, too, in the form of an en-suite shower in the master bedroom, and a main bathroom with a very large bath and a walk-in shower. There’s even an additional loo, completely eradicating those morning queues!

More information

Ready to explore your surroundings? Behind the houseboat are Pin Mill Woods, which form part of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – why not take an energising stroll before enjoying a well-deserved drink at Pin Mill’s beautiful pub, the famous Butt and Oyster.

There’s a restaurant and shop within a mere ten-minute stroll if you’re not looking to stray too far. But for those with an appetite for a hearty walk, the coastal path from Pin Mill to the tip of the Shotley Peninsula takes some beating. From there you can take the foot-ferry to Harwich or Felixstowe for an even more enticing day out.

Other attractions on the Shotley Peninsula include Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, of TV fame, or you can head to Ipswich and glide across the River Orwell aboard Sailing Barge Victor, a historic vessel that offers cruises with supper or afternoon tea… for an extra treat!

Head back to the Adrianto after a day thoroughly well-spent, just in time to catch the evening sun melting into the river. Utter bliss.
