The Guardian were so impressed by Round House East, that they featured the historic retreat in their 2020 list of ’40 Extraordinary Places to Stay in the UK’.
It’s easy to see why. First, the Round House is located in the beautiful village of Veryan, close to the coastal path on southern Cornwall’s stunning Roseland Peninsula. Described by the great Sir John Betjeman as “a mild tropic garden”, the village is often referred to as one of Cornwall’s loveliest locations.
Then, there’s the unique and intriguing history of the Grade II*-listed Round House itself. One of four round thatched houses built in 1820 by the Reverend Trist, the curved design was intended to stop the devil from hiding in the house, and the striking cross on the roof was intended to keep the devil out of the village.
Warm, cosy and comforting inside, and dog-friendly (because why would you want to leave your best friend at home?) in modern times Round House East is the ideal romantic retreat for two.
A widescreen TV with a sound bar and DVD player, along with Superfast Broadband and digital radios will help keep you entertained when you’re all walked out, along with a generous, well-chosen selection of books (though you could always get hold of a souvenir copy of ‘Poldark’s Cornwall’, which features Round House East itself.)
The light-filled kitchen is a joy to spend time in, with its vibrant SMEG fridge, Nespresso machine, and selection of cookbooks to help inspire you at dinner time! Simply take the delicious results over to the glass-topped dining table and open a bottle of wine…
…though on balmy summer evenings, you might prefer heading out to the private garden instead; a little slice of paradise that’s surrounded by whispering trees, flowers, and chirping birds.

After an energetic day of walking the coastal path, or lazing on the nearby Carne and Pendower beaches, the sumptuous bedroom ‘in the round’ will be a welcome sight! Furnished with a superking bed and surrounded by soft-toned, gently curved walls, a sound night’s sleep is all but guaranteed.
Freshen up in your en-suite bathroom (there’s also a shower room downstairs) and get ready for another day at the beach, exploring the delights of Cornwall…
…or simply stocking up on essentials at the village shop, before spending a lazy afternoon in the friendly local pub, which you’ll find is conveniently just around the corner!
Things to note
Stay from Saturday to Saturday. Check in from 3pm, check out by 10am. Up to two dogs are welcome, at a small extra charge per dog. Regrettably, Round House East is not suitable for children. A local caretaker will be available throughout your stay, and transport can be arranged from St. Austell train station or Newquay airport.

“Full of history, it is beautifully furnished, spotless, comfortable ; great for the two of us and our cocker spaniel. There are spectacular walks along the coast right from the cottage. There are superb restaurants nearby. The owner has some great recommendations on the web site . We loved Driftwood for a special lunch time treat on the terrace. The hidden hut is a hidden gem! The instructions to find and open the cottage were faultless. There is helpful information in the cottage, including photos of the path to the beach . We couldn’t have asked for more. We will be back!”
