The Pavilion at Hide occupies a truly magnificent garden location, set within seven-and-a-half acres of private woodland in the south Wales village of St Donats, in the mesmerising Vale of Glamorgan.

Just 25 minutes from Cardiff, the tranquil site is a perfect escape from stressful everyday life, with whimsical delights that include an arboretum and tulip tree, and a small selection of unique retreats. Each one has been crafted and curated by owners Paula and Tom to embody a blissful sense of ‘cwtch’ – that glorious Welsh word for an affectionate hug.

As such, you’ll find The Pavilion adorned with a five-meter window that showcases spectacular views of the sweeping Jurassic coastline beyond. You’ll also be surrounded by ethically-sourced, local artisan creations that include intricate glasswork, eye-catching prints, and soft designer textiles.

Perfect for a romantic couple, the retreat also boasts a cosy twin room at the rear, to accommodate up to four guests in total (children must be over 12).

Relax together in the beautiful open-plan living space, furnished with well-chosen antiques, as well as a TV, a handy selection of board games, and a warming wood-burner for snuggly evenings in. There’s a fully-fitted kitchen for preparing meals and snacks, and a scenic terrace to savour them on – washed down with chilled glasses of wine.

With a barbecue and firepit also on hand, you could plan sizzling sunset suppers followed by dreamy summer nights of storytelling under the stars. And for an extra treat, why not arrange a delivery of fresh croissants for breakfast the next morning?

A sound night’s sleep is all but guaranteed in the comfy superking bed, and there’s a shower room to freshen up in when you wake. Enjoy morning coffee surrounded by a soundtrack of nature on the deck – perhaps using the binoculars provided for a better look at the local wildlife – and it’s on to the important business of planning your day.

More information

A breezy coastal path walk will lead you to some wonderful pubs and restaurants, including the Grade II-listed Plough and Harrow, one of the oldest pubs in Wales. And since you are in Wales, a castle-visit is a must! Castle Coch and Caerphilly Castle are in easy reach, as is Cardiff Castle; one of Wales’s most significant heritage attractions.

A little closer to your holiday sanctuary lies the medieval St Donat’s Castle, with clifftop views that overlook the Bristol Channel, and a 12th century Grade I-listed church in its shadow. St Donats Arts Centre, a gallery housed in the castle grounds’ medieval Tythe Barn, is well worth a visit, too.

Yet even with so much history and wonder practically on the doorstep, you may feel perfectly content to breathe out, sit back, and unwind at The Pavilion all holiday long… a decision nobody would blame you for.
