A private, adults-only sanctuary in the Forest of Dean, steeped in luxury with a covered deck and an al fresco bath for unwinding and reconnecting in sublime nature.
  • Sleeps: 2
  • Bedroom: 1
  • Bathroom: 1
  • Minimum stay: 2 nights

When creating their beloved Oak Cabin, owners Christine and Steve were inspired both by the five-star luxury holidays they loved, and the simple country escapes that made them slow down and reconnect in tranquil nature.

Perfect for couples with weary souls and heavy minds, Oak Cabin is a celebration of everything that’s so magical about going away: precious time with your loved one, in a private, idyllic haven of natural beauty and indulgent comfort.

You’ll also feel a welcome sense of place from the moment you arrive. Ochre Hill is named in tribute to the Forest of Dean’s rich mining history, and you’ll find locally-produced goodies in the cabin, to help get your stay off to a relaxing start.

Also inside await warm wood and grounding earth-tones that merge with the landscape, along with luxuries that include a soft-glowing wood-burner for cosy evenings in. You’ll also have a fully-fitted kitchen for romantic feast preparation, and a Netflix-enabled Smart TV to snuggle up by. Don’t worry if you’re on a digital detox, as there’s a ready supply of books and games, too.

If the evening sun is shining, take a dip in your opulent stone bath-for-two, which is perfectly placed outside on the covered deck for scenic soaks. Or wander along to your private firepit, set beside the pond, for laughter-fuelled storytelling and marshmallow-toasting under the emerging stars.

When you’re finally ready to turn in, the kingsize bed will be ready to aid a sound, silent night of slumber. You’ll also find the en-suite shower room stocked with toiletries, fluffy towels and bathrobes to wrap up in, before morning coffee and birdsong out on the deck.

What you’ll do with the rest of the day is completely your choice. If you’re in the mood for a stroll, there’s a wealth of woodland trails and hidden paths to explore (if you’d rather travel on two wheels than two legs, you can hire bikes close by or bring your own, with secure, covered bike storage at the cabin).

More information

You could also try taking the walk that made Christine and Steve fall head-over-heels in love with this beautiful part of the world: up to the top of the hill just behind the cabin. Here you’ll take in magnificent, sweeping views across the Severn Valley, with the river on your left and enchanting forest on your right. (Christine recommends taking a blanket, as you’ll want to stay awhile!).

What else? Elton Farm Leisure is a short stroll away, where you can play adventure golf or laser clays. Puzzlewood and Clearwell Caves – home to the UK’s last working ochre mine – are both well worth a visit, and there are options for kayaking, fishing and wild swimming for those who like to get up close and personal with nature.

Of course, you could always decide to stay put in your sumptuous cabin – perhaps indulging in a relaxing massage from a recommended local therapist! – and luxuriate in that blissful feeling of coming home to yourselves again.

Things to note

Pets are not permitted to stay. Please bring suitable footwear and a torch for navigating the unlit paths at night. Please note that while there is another cabin on the site, this is unoccupied at present so you will have the space all to yourselves. EV charging is available on site.

What the guests of Oak Cabin at Ochre Hill say

“We had our wedding ceremony three weeks ago and we were in dire need to find a place to recharge and revitalise ourselves. We could not have found a better place than Ochre Hill. We found everything we need in the cabin and the set up is meticulous. It has the most soothing atmosphere and the most friendly neighbours (the sheep). Thank you Christine & Steve for preparing such a wonderful place. We have enjoyed our stay very much.”

“Lovely stay in a beautiful location, quiet and pretty. The cabin had everything we needed for our short break, it is beautifully done and furnished. Love the idea of fitting in the surroundings and not disturbing the setting with light pollution, we experienced a gorgeous starry sky by the fire. It was perfect, thank you.”

“What can we say.. Just WOW! Stunning cabin inside and out. Beautiful remote location – peaceful and private. Highlight has to be the outdoor bath – so relaxing, and opportunity to watch wildlife and chat with the neighbouring sheep! We WILL be visiting again for more quality husband and wife time (away from the children!). Thank you.”
