If you can’t decide between a coastal or countryside break, don’t worry, since Merlin Farm Eco Cottages offer the best of both holiday worlds! Each named after a North Cornwall beach, the sumptuous, eco-friendly barn conversions are set within tranquil countryside that’s a mere stroll away from the dreamy golden-sand bay at Mawgan Porth.
Owners Darrel and Lucy – both hoteliers in a previous life – renovated the barns themselves, lovingly transforming each one into an award-winning holiday cottage powered by nature. Many of the soft furnishings you’ll discover inside your chosen cottage were made by Lucy herself, while close attention to detail and well-chosen facilities mean all you have to do is relax.
Each cottage sleeps up to four guests, with a gleaming glass front that means you can keep an eye on those rolling hills whatever the time of day (and whatever the weather!). Once you’ve stepped inside the indulgences just keep on coming, from energy-efficient underfloor heating to high thread-count Egyptian cotton linen, an opulent wet-room bathroom with waterfall taps, and soft bamboo-cotton bathrobes to wrap up in.
Constantine is a pet-free cottage that’s ideal for guests with allergies, as well as small families (note that the en-suite loft bedroom is best suited to children rather than adults, due to its low ceiling). Porthcothan and Harlyn both welcome dogs at certain times of the year, also boasting an en-suite loft bedroom and a ground-floor master kingsize room for sound nights of slumber.
You’ll also have your very own outdoor space, with a dining area and seating that’s perfect for wildlife-watching and Dark Sky stargazing alike. (Nearby Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps is an accredited part of the Dark Sky Discovery Network, complete with stargazing beds for keen astronomers).
What else? There’s a woodburner for cosy evenings in, whether you’re watching TV or getting lost in the kind of deep, laughter-fuelled conversation that’s hard to find time for at home. You’ll find the kitchen ably equipped for meals of just about every description – there’s even a washing machine and ironing facilities, too – with a coffee filter machine to help charge mornings spent in the fresh air, watching the day (and hearing the myriad of birds!) come slowly to life.
What to do with the rest of it is your choice. Maybe you’ll take that stroll to Mawgan Porth Beach and explore the hidden coves, play crazy golf, or learn how to surf. There are plenty of in-and-outdoor spas to relax in (for a special treat, arrange a spa treatment in the comfort of your cottage), or perhaps embark on a long, breezy walk along the iconic South West Coast Path.

What the guests of Merlin Farm Eco Cottages say
“We loved our stay at Merlin Farm. We stayed in Harlyn Cottage. We loved the huge glass windows giving lots of light, and the whole cottage was very well designed, furnished and finished to a very high spec. It has the feel of a labour of love. The location is super peaceful, and there is a signposted walk through the wood to the beach at Mawgan Porth , which was beautiful to walk to. Lucy and Darrel are great hosts, warm and friendly but respectful of privacy. We’d love to stay again.”
“A wonderful tucked away location in the countryside. Welcoming friendly hosts. The house was modern and very well presented. A short walk away is Mawgan Porth bay and a couple of nice pubs and restaurants. We would highly recommend this to anyone.”
“I have stayed in a lot of cottages in Cornwall and this is utterly one of my favourites. Our hosts have thought about everything. It was dressed so perfectly for the holidays, was comfortable and we slept so well. Location is perfect as were the sunsets and our incredible hosts. Thank you so much for a spectacular new year.”
