Secluded in a traditional French village in the rural heart of Charente-Maritime – just 30 minutes from the wild Atlantic Côte Sauvage and its legendary surf spots – La Ferme de Brouage is an organic farm that thrives with nature.

You’ll feel time slowly turning back as you head through the farm’s ancient entrance gate and survey these picturesque surroundings. Rich in vibrant flora, fauna, and newly-planted trees, the vast, wildlife-steeped Brouage marsh beyond is home to diverse bird life, many of which you’ll spot during your stay.

Accommodation comes in the superlative form of an 18th century barn, restored and revived with help from LSL Architects: a European firm that specialises in sophisticated, eco-friendly design.

Here you’ll find five light-flooded, self-contained cottages – or gîtes – crafted from natural materials including lime, hemp and wood, for an exquisite blend of old and new. Historic elements such as exposed beams sit perfectly alongside soaring ceilings, enormous windows, and plush, neutral-toned furnishings, for a welcoming atmosphere that feels instantly relaxing.

Perfect for small families, three gîtes each sleep between four and eight guests, with a mixture of adult and child-sized beds. Featuring a cosy mezzanine library, the fourth is ideal for larger groups – perhaps a long-awaited family reunion or a fun-filled catch-up with friends? – sleeping up to 14 guests in comfort.

Last but not least, the fifth gîte is ideal for up to five guests, romantically housed in a former dovecote with sweeping views of lush fields and whispering, centuries-old trees.

Whichever you choose, you’ll have a private viewing terrace and shared access to the large outdoor swimming pool… perfect for cooling off on long, lazy summer afternoons. On arrival you will also be fully introduced to the farm, and shown how to pluck your own seasonal fruits, vegetables, and aromatic herbs, in a wide-ranging and unlimited supply!

Back on the farm, the friendly owners host a programme of events that range from open-air cinema and performances, to children’s workshops and farming tips… which means however you choose to spend your time here, it will surely be filled with nature, charm, and wonder.
