Perfect for whole-family holidays, Harvey is a joyfully quirky vintage carriage-on-the-coast, set right by Hayle railway station on the Cornish main line.
The “beautiful chocolate-and-cream coach” – as described by Michael Portillo on his popular Great British Railway Journeys TV show – has also been awarded a Gold rating from the Green Tourism Business Scheme, for a refreshingly sustainable stay. Not only do guests receive a discount on their stay when arriving by train, but they also have the opportunity to plant a tree to offset their carbon.
Though you’ll be a mere amble away from three miles of gorgeous golden sands (not to mention one train stop from the branch line to St. Ives!) you may find it hard to tear yourselves away from your charming carriage. Surrounded by vintage décor and original 1950’s British Rail paraphernalia, including lampshades, luggage racks and signage, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped straight into a magical time capsule.
You’ll also have ample, enclosed outdoor space – complete with a signal box playhouse – for the kids and dogs to exert as much energy as they like, and a wooden deck to help you savour those well-deserved sundowners. The dedicated campfire area, with chestnut seats and a recycled washing-machine drum as a brazier, is perfect for relaxed, star-studded evenings all together. Oh, and there’s even a dedicated train viewing platform for the trainspotters in your group!
Although only ever let to one party at a time, Harvey is divided at the corridor into two self-contained sections, East and West, offering exclusive accommodation for single groups of up to 10 guests (please note that the price refers to the East End only: groups of more than four guests must book the East and West End together).
Perfect for couples, small families or a group of friends, the East End boasts a well-equipped kitchen and a cosy lounge, with a separate toilet and shower. Two sleeping compartments: one a double and the other a four-person bunk-room, ensure sound nights of slumber. The West End, meanwhile, features a further double sleeping space and a second lounge, together with its own shower-room and kitchen.
Whatever the needs of your group, they’ll be exceedingly well-met: not only can both lounges become sleeping spaces if needed, but the East and West Ends can be divided into two separate apartments by Harvey’s central sliding doors – ideal if the kids (or indeed, the grown-ups!) need a little space to themselves.

More information
Not only that, but with so many different ways to spend your time, no-one will be bored! A walk to Hayle Town is a good place to begin your holiday adventures, with its summer outdoor swimming pool and a glorious riverside promenade – the King George V Memorial Walk – to stroll along. There are plenty of pubs, restaurants, and cafés on hand if you don’t feel like cooking, too. Just a twenty minute walk from the carriage is Hayle’s award winning beach; three miles of golden sand backed by glorious sand dunes.
What else? Try your hand – and test your balance! – at surfing, explore Cornwall’s mining history with a trip to Hayle Heritage Centre, or head to Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary to meet exotic birds and enjoy a tipple in the on-site pub… and all that’s just for starters!
Things to note
Although the carriage is divided into East and West Ends, it is only ever booked to one party at a time. Groups of more than four people must book both sections together. Please note that there are very few trains at night and the train viewing platform is sensitively positioned by a fence, to ensure privacy. The sleeping compartments are fitted with standard double mattresses with no space to extend the feet beyond the end, which may render them unsuitable for taller guests. A full Access Guide is available on the property website.

What the guests of Harvey of Hayle say
“Steve, Jane and their four-legged friends Digger and MickeyBrilliant base for exploring Cornwall with excellent public transport links. Thank you for being dog friendly. Loved the fire pit. Will recommend to all our friends.”
“Lovely to be back at Harvey. Unsure how many times we’ve visited – always a great stay. Brought Mum and Auntie this time for Xmas. Perranporth and St Ives all beautiful as usual. We love Harvey.”
“Accommodation has been great and loved checking out the train times to watch them fly by. Managed to walk three little sections of the coastal path – you can catch the bus to anywhere in Foundry Square, so the car never moved. Godrevy Lighthouse to see the seals is a must too.”
