The beautiful village port of Charlestown has played host to many famous figures in its time, from Poldark to Alice in Wonderland…and most recently George Clarke, who featured Harbour Lights, formerly known as the ‘Loo with a View’, on his hugely popular ‘Amazing Spaces’ TV programme.
It’s not hard to see why George was so captivated by the intricate work lovingly carried out on this imaginative and elegantly restored property. Built in 1771 as a fish and net cellar, the building was later renovated into public conveniences before being rescued from its ramshackle state in 2015. The building has now been fully renovated into a truly luxurious pet-friendly two-bedroomed holiday hideaway, full of natural character and marine-inspired style, featuring truly unsurpassed sea views from the cliff top.
Great care and attention has been taken with the design and furnishing of every room to ensure perfect harmony with the beautiful coastal surroundings. Ancient reclaimed timber décor and solid oak doors add chic touches of time-honoured style, alongside the more contemporary pure white Italian marble worktops and soft grey backgrounds that perfectly complement the magnificent bay and harbour views from the windows.
The ground floor encompasses a spacious open-plan living area, described by George Clarke as fabulously “light and airy”, featuring a fully furnished designer kitchen that looks out across the harbour. Fire up the stylish log burner and watch the ships as they glide languidly by!
Take the stairs and discover two exquisite bedrooms, one large double featuring glorious views over the harbour and Charlestown Bay – with a luxurious Heritage bath right at the bottom of the bed. The second, slightly smaller, bedroom features a beautiful view of the garden area.
You’ll also find a stunning Italian marble and stainless steel furnished en-suite, and a utility area and walk-in wardrobe featuring fitted storage and a washer-dryer.
Underfloor heating and a Sonos sound system with three independent zones runs throughout, so that wherever you happen to be, you’ll be effortlessly able to set the perfect mood!

More information
The views become even better outside, when experienced with a glass of bubbles from the lavish four-seater hot tub looking out across the sea! There’s a slate patio with shower area that’s particularly lovely after a sandy day on the beach, and a beautiful garden with decked terraces and colourfully lush flowers and plants that have been carefully selected to make the most of their surroundings.
Discover Harbour Lights’ namesake at the end of the garden…a quaint little lookout shed which in times past was home to the searchlight that guided the Tall Ships safely into harbour. Here you’ll find two benches carved from the old roof timbers, creating the perfect romantic hideaway.
Oh – and just in case you’re wondering whether any remnants of the building’s former history remain, hanging proudly above the downstairs bathroom are the original ‘ladies’ and ‘gentlemen’ signs…the Cornish born-and-bred owners just couldn’t bring themselves to flush those away!
You’ll find it extremely difficult to tear yourself away from this sea sanctuary, but if you decide to venture out and about, why not take your dog to Charlestown beach for a run, perhaps with some seal and dolphin-spotting along the way? Watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch before taking yourselves off to indulge in a gourmet seafood meal at the award-winning Falmouth Bay Seafood Café, another of the owners’ stylish dog-friendly retreats.
There’s also a large and friendly selection of local restaurants, bars and ice-cream parlours just five minutes’ walk away, including the locally renowned Pier House Hotel. The ancient Grade 2 listed port is steeped in historical architecture…along with a glittering touch of celebrity from its regular use as a film set.
So set sail to Harbour Lights and take a punt on a invigorating and relaxing break with genuinely breathtaking sea views you won’t forget in a hurry!
