The brainchild of Yorkshire Vehicle Hire, Defender Camping allows you to get right under the skin of some of the UK’s most spectacular landscapes, by renting an iconic Land Rover Defender, complete with a rooftop tent and a full camping kit!
Ideal for two adults (and their four-legged friends!), you can choose from Milly, a ‘pocket rocket’ Defender 90 with two seats and a drive away awning, or Bruce, a Defender 110 Utility with five seats and large boot space – ideal if you’re bringing the dogs, and perhaps even a littler guest, along for the ride!
Once you’ve completed your ‘getting to know you’ session with Milly or Bruce, you’re free to take the open road. Set out on your favourite of a scenic selection of rugged routes that take you all over the UK, with handy suggestions for stop-offs and favourite campsites thrown in.
The Best of the Moors takes you along open moorland roads that showcase the finest of UK coast and country in 2-3 days… perfect for a unique weekend break. History buffs may prefer the Northumberland 250 route, with its – you guessed it! – 250 thrilling miles of amazing views and historic landmarks.
Those looking for a longer break will love embarking on the world-famous Scottish North Coast 500 route, or why not make an even greater escape with the Isle of Arran Coastal Road – otherwise known as ‘Scotland in Miniature’? Beginning with a 45-minute ferry ride from Ardrossan, you’ll feel as though you’re truly getting away from it all.

You’ll be snug as two (or three!) bugs in a rug on top of your flat-roofed Defender, bedding down on a comfy memory foam mattress… and with plenty of storage inside your insulated tent, it’s easy to create a calming, cosy space that’s completely your own.
A full camp cooking kit is also supplied, with an inventive collapsible sink, a collapsible kettle, a multi-purpose barbecue and grill system, and all the equipment and utensils you’ll need. There’s even the option to upgrade your break, with luxury add-ons that range from a craft beer box to a pizza oven.
There’s just one last thing. Every road trip worth its salt needs an epic playlist… and Defender Camping have created one especially. So, all that’s left for you to do is fire up Spotify, wind down the windows, and get ready to embark on your very own adventure!
Things to note
Well-behaved small/medium sized dogs are welcome. Please allow for a 60-minute familiarisation session with your chosen Defender before setting off on your adventure.

Absolutely everything you could need is packed away neatly; table, chairs, cooking equipment and little touches like salt/pepper, chocolate buttons and fully charged power banks, you can tell how much thought is put in to everything included. Tom was brilliant at talking us through everything when we collected and was flexible with collection and drop off times meaning we got to make the most of our time with the Defender. The roof tent goes up and down in seconds and is spacious enough to sit up in and very comfortable to sleep in. The car itself is just a dream, we were able to explore the windy roads of the Lake District, watch the sunrise from the roof tent and genuinely just feel like the coolest people on the planet. We will definitely be hiring again I can’t recommend Tom and Yorkshire Vehicle Hire enough I think they’re really on to a winner here!”

In truth there was not a single thing that we felt like we were missing – from the camping chairs, fully kitted kitchen down to the camping axe that we used to chop up our firewood for our camp fires – these guys have thought about literally EVERYTHING! “Hired the Defender 90 for a few days up in the Lake District and the Dales and it was absolutely amazing! The vehicle is so much fun to drive / camp in particularly as it’s so unique! It’s a real head turner. It’s also incredibly easy to use – the tent takes less than 20 seconds to pop up and it’s maybe 1 – 2 minutes to put down (super easy and Tom walked us through it to make sure we got it.) The defender comes kitted out with everything you’d want or need for some adventurous time away camping and was incredibly comfortable. My girlfriend isn’t the biggest fan of camping so this was the compromise and she loved it! We took our own duvet and that combined with the memory foam mattress made for some super comfortable sleeping (if you’re worried about whether it’s comfortable or not, don’t!) Honestly can’t reccomend this and Tom enough and it’s been a real blessing to explore the countryside more! We’re already planning the next booking in April!”
