The Black Castle
Ireland / Coolbaun, Tipperary
Full description
Travel back through time with an ‘over-knight' stay for two in a majestically authentic 16th century Gaelic castle.
It may be a long way to Tipperary, but travelling back to the 16th century is a far shorter journey than you may think!
Secluded within the breathtaking natural landscape of the shimmering Lough Derg, amongst the invigorating backdrop of North Tipperary, you will find the 16th century Black Castle, beautifully steeped in natural history, cultural richness and creative imagination.
Built in the 1500s by the renowned O'Kennedy clan, and named for the dark ivy that used to adorn its walls, parts of the Black Castle's loving and painstaking restoration is still in process by its passionate and friendly owners, and you can rest assured that the cost of your ‘overknighter' will help contribute to the preservation of this imposing castle, helping it to live on for many more centuries.
But for now, leave all the stresses of 21st century life far behind, as you travel through the private, traffic-free road that leads to your castle, bordered by a running stream and ancient woodland.
The Black Castle's Great Hall is your cosy destination, accessible via an authentic 16th century winding stone staircase. Immerse yourselves in history as you take those stairs and enter the magnificent Great Hall, with its vaulted ceiling and opulent windows making it easy to imagine just what it would be like to be in the shoes of a weary ancient traveller, newly introduced to untold luxury and lively festivities!
The atmosphere in the Black Castle is uniquely true to how life genuinely would have been lived over five hundred years ago, with everything you might expect in a 21st century holiday home banished to where it belongs.
Therefore you will find no electricity, WiFi or heating in the Great Hall itself (although if you can't live without your phone or tablet, fear not, as there is electricity in the kitchenette below). Instead, prepare to luxuriate in good company and lively conversation, as you reconnect with your loved one amongst soft-glowing candlelight, in front of a roaring, carved open fireplace. Books and games are provided too, along with a set of replica 18th century playing cards for competitive types.
The kitchenette contains slightly more updated home comforts, including a coffee machine, electric kettle and cooking equipment, with continental breakfast items and a welcome hamper provided. There is no bath or shower at the castle, simply a composting toilet for your comfort, with natural handmade soap and hand towels.
Your sleeping area, of course, is gloriously fit for castle living! A bespoke king-sized bed awaits, crafted from oak and draped in fine quality bedding, crisp Egyptian cotton, plump pillows and a downy duvet.
If the weather permits, why not make the most of your ‘overknighter' by exploring the castle's 13 acres of land? If you're feeling in an al-fresco mood, lighting the campfire and quaffing wine at the rustic outdoor seating area will make for a truly authentic 16th century traveller experience.
On colder or wetter days, why not head to the top floors instead, and gaze out over ancient castle ruins, dotted amongst the magnificent Silvermine mountain landscape? Of course, the local area is dotted with shops and restaurants, should you feel the need to head back into modern life for any period of time.
If you're in need of an escape from 21st century pressures, simply pack up that shining suit of armour and prepare your carriage, for an ‘overknight' stay that will leave you with a genuine taste of life as it was once so gloriously lived.
Things to note
The Great Hall of the castle is intended to re-create the ambience and life inside a 16th Century castle, hence there is no electricity, plumbing or Wi-Fi provided in the Great Hall (but there is electricity in the kitchenette) and there is no bath/shower facilities, however there is an option to have a shower at the public amenities at Dromineer or Terryglass, both about 15 minutes drive from the Castle. The experience is usually offered for one night stays only and is seasonal between May and October.
