A luxury, eco-friendly holiday retreat created from 500 bales of straw, boasting spectacular Scottish Highland views.

Privately nestled in the Highland village of Strontian, near Fort William, you can expect the most awe-inspiring views over the shimmering Loch Sunart from Jill Strawbale House, which faces south towards the Morvern Hills.

Created from 500 bales of straw and eco-friendly to the last (the house has been awarded Green Tourism Gold), you might be forgiven for thinking that this is back-to-basics living. However, with intricate architecture housing floor-to-ceiling windows, huge living and sleeping spaces, and even a lower deck hot tub, this is holiday opulence at its finest.

You'll be living upside-down here - well, with scenery this spectacular you wouldn't want to sleep through all the best views!  Huge, magnificent windows allow light to flood into your open-plan kitchen, living and dining areas at the top, while sliding glass doors lead you outside and onto a furnished balcony.  (We recommend spending your mornings here, greeting the sunrise with a mug of fresh coffee).

Take the spiral staircase down to a generous lower deck, where you'll find a crackling chimenea, comfy seating...and the aforementioned six-person hot tub. Later on, discover two beautiful ensuite bedrooms, one kingsize and one twin, both featuring stunning views to wake up to.

With seven acres of surrounding land to explore, you'll feel delightfully secluded from the rest of the world, yet still reassuringly close to the local attractions. Perhaps begin with a refreshing walk through the historic Ariundle oak woods, and see if you can discover the old lead mines?

Mountain walks are a must in the Highlands, of course, as is a visit to the little-known sandy Scottish beaches that easily rival the best in the world. Sanna Bay, with its white sand dunes and island views, makes for a relaxing and visually breathtaking day out.

This being whisky country, a stop-off at the Ardmamurchan Distillery means you can sample some of the finest around, while the Ardmamurchan Lighthouse is at the most westerly tip of the British Isles, guaranteeing even more amazing views.

There's plenty for the kids to do too, with an abundance of wildlife all around, skiing at Glencoe and Ben Nevis...and for a special treat, Harry Potter fans can take the ‘Jacobite Express' steam train from Fort William to Mallaig.

This is a truly unique holiday retreat that begs to be experienced at its absolute best. So it's time to switch off that phone and log off that laptop, and immerse yourselves in all the captivating natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
