Astro-enthusiasts rejoice: this August heralds a total solar eclipse, which will be visible along a path sweeping from Russian Siberia to northern Portugal and Spain.
If you’ve noticed people getting excited, it might be because the eclipse is the first of its kind to hit mainland Europe this century! The total eclipse will peak at two minutes and 18 seconds, with a partial eclipse visible an hour before and after totality.
For those who crave front-row seats to the August sky, the best locations include western Iceland, northern Portugal, and northern Spain. It will also be possible to see the eclipse in the UK, but wherever you choose, setting is key. Think open landscapes, clear skies, and low light pollution for optimal viewing pleasure.
We’ve rounded up some unusual retreats that sit on (or close to) the eclipse path, for those who plan to make the most of this rare celestial event! We also canvassed our lovely UK property owners, and included those who are confident you’ll be close to a good viewing point when the moment comes.
(As with all types of eclipse, never look directly at the sun. Sunglasses of any kind are not safe, and the National Solar Observatory recommends “special-purpose solar filters, such as ‘eclipse glasses’”. We also strongly recommend doing your own research before booking, to ensure you’ll have the best possible view of the eclipse from your chosen retreat).
