An extraordinary adults-only escape, in a historic Oxfordshire landmark that boasts breathtaking 360-degree views of three different counties

Standing proudly in rural Oxfordshire, The Windmill at Blackthorn Hill cuts a grandly historic dash.  No wonder the retreat was selected as one of the UK’s best stays by The Times newspaper.

The characterful Grade II listed building was once known as the East Mill, and dates all the way back to the seventeenth century.  Now sublimely renovated, there are plenty of original features to marvel at, with contemporary additions that allow you to enjoy 360-degree views of three different counties, without leaving the comfort of your windmill.

Enter via the roof garden, to be welcomed by a solid oak door.  As you step inside, your charming and historic surroundings will make you feel as though you’ve travelled gently back in time.

There are two elegant double bedrooms: each featuring a downy bed, ambient lighting, plenty of hanging space, and an en-suite bathroom stocked with complimentary Duck Island Spa toiletries.  You’ll also have a large HD Smart TV with Amazon Prime Video – ideal for lazy lie-ins!

(Note: although the mill can accommodate up to four guests, if you’d rather book a romantic retreat just for two then there is a special reduced rate in place).

Head up the spiral stairs to the fitted kitchen, perfectly equipped with everything you’ll need to whip up a procession of delicious meals, a dishwasher to help make clearing up afterwards nice and easy, and a coffee maker with pods supplied.

(Don’t forget to pause and admire the views through the window by the stairs, which overlooks lush, open fields).

More information

But the real jewel in The Windmill’s crown is the Sky Lounge, aka the top-floor living space. You’ll find it equipped with cosy sofas positioned in front of a large Smart TV, a generous dining space, and of course, those magnificent rural views from windows that stretch all the way around the building.

We recommend getting up as early as you can, making a steaming mug of coffee and seeing if you can spot any grazing deer. You may also see red kites soaring over the landscape, too – and don’t forget those awe-inspiring sunsets (tip: bring your camera).

You’ve also got the option of heading for the private lawn area on the roof terrace: a glorious and sunset-watching spot complete with cosy furniture – perfect for getting lost in conversation over a glass of wine or two!

As if all that wasn’t enough, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the local area. For starters, Bicester Village, otherwise known as the UK’s largest shopping outlet, is a mere stone’s throw away.

If shopping leaves you cold, a 25-minute drive will take you into the culture-steeped city of Oxford, and there are plenty of heritage sites to pay a visit to, including Warwick Castle and the ornate Waddesdon Manor House.  Though confirmed petrol heads may prefer a trip to nearby Silverstone instead!

However you decide to spend your holiday time, feel free to indulge and enjoy it all to your hearts’ content. Relax, safe in the knowledge that your idyllic windmill will be waiting to welcome you at the end of another action-packed day.

Things to note

Not suitable for children, no pets permitted.  Secure gated parking spaces are available for two cars, one with an EV charger.
