Painswick is known as the “Queen of the Cotswolds” for its distinctive and timeless elegance. Characterised by narrow winding streets, historic buildings and hidden courtyards, mesmerising views lead your gaze towards fresh, rolling hills that seem to stretch out forever.

In the heart of this beautiful village lies The Painswick Retreat: a private, sumptuous wellness haven for groups of up to 24 guests (including four children), created from three 17th century, Grade II-listed properties with a rollcall of wellbeing-focused delights.

While the buildings’ original Cotswold stonework and characterful exposed beams are perfectly preserved, modern luxuries include smart lighting, voice-controlled features, and a private AI concierge, to help you feel relaxed from the moment you arrive.

You’ll find the dedicated wellness suite equipped with a three-person infrared sauna, medical-grade red light therapy panels, and zero-gravity massage chairs to help recharge your batteries. Prefer more activity? No problem: there’s a well-equipped gym on hand, ideally followed with a dip in the hydrotherapy hot tub, found in the enchanting courtyard garden, as the sun melts into the horizon.

Choose your favourite sleeping space from five kingsize bedrooms and five double rooms, with additional sofa beds and four children’s singles available on request. Some of the rooms boast chromotherapy lighting – ideal for restless sleepers! – with premium hybrid mattresses and luxury linens to make you feel like you’re snoozing on a cloud.

Of course, wellness is found in time spent with loved ones, and at The Painswick Retreat there’s plenty of scope to do just that. The banqueting hall is styled and furnished for long, lazy, laughter-fuelled feasts whipped up in not one, but two fully-equipped kitchens (a real treat for the budding chefs in your group!), with smaller dining areas also available for more intimate mealtimes.

On sunny evenings, those courtyard gardens offer an idyllic backdrop for laid-back barbecues… just light the firepit for cosy sessions of digestif-quaffing and storytelling later on.
