A delightfully quirky ‘tin tabernacle' on the Isle of Wight, a divine setting for a bracing island escape you'll soon be saying your prayers to return to!
  • Sleeps: 8
  • Bedrooms: 4
  • Bathrooms: 2
  • Minimum stay: 2 nights

It stands to reason that The Mission is situated in an designated Area of Outstanding Beauty – Blythe Shute on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, to be exact.

This glorious pet-friendly ‘tin tabernacle’ sleeps up to eight people in four bedrooms (a ninth guest can be accommodated in the main living space if needed), harmoniously blending with its beautiful surroundings. In other words, your scene is perfectly set for an original and characterful break, full of amazing coastal scenery and lush countryside that’s just perfect for walking, whether you’re off to explore the local area or the local pubs!

Built in 1899, this unique living space is just bursting with history, and its vibrantly colourful conversion has remained carefully true to the building’s traditions and character. Each room features its very own special flourishes of vintage style and eccentric imagination – for example, how many places have you stayed before where the luxurious sunken bath was originally a baptismal font?

Two funky mezzanine bedrooms – one boasting a four-poster kingsize bed – inhabit the roof space, and downstairs you’ll be greeted by a double height living area with an abundance of plush, comfy furnishing and vintage décor that’s just perfect for any congregation.

There’s a record player with a large selection of vinyl, games and jigsaws for rainy days, table football and a 55” Smart TV with a Wii console for competitive types and gamers alike… along with the hugest woodburning stove you’ll have ever seen!

Towards the back, the kitchen and dining area is charmingly vintage in style, yet packed with all the contemporary cookware and baking equipment you could wish for… you’ll be tying on your pinny in no time to whip up a teatime feast fit for the vicar.

Stroll over to the large and luxurious bathroom with its aforementioned bath in place of the original font, just perfect for contemplating the joys of life whilst relaxing with your favourite bathtime elixir.

Where you'll be staying

Ventnor, Isle of Wight

What the guests of The Mission say

“The Tabernacle is an extraordinary building with an even more surprising interior, well equipped and packed with things to do. The Wight Mouse Inn is a short walk just around the corner and Ventnor a 15 minute drive away for more great food. We stayed here using the accommodation as a base for exploring the island by motorbike and returning each evening was something extra to look forward to. Spacious, retro, quirky, we had an excellent time. We will need to return to have a table football rematch.”

“This house was stunningly atmospheric and we loved staying here. It was that rare mix of wow factor, with history, and child friendly. Children and adults alike loved the beautifully restored mission building all its lovely quirks preserved through time. The 1950s kitchen built from surplus steel originally destined for building spitfires in the Second World War was another favourite gem. Having the Wight Mouse Inn on our doorstep was excellent. Our favourite trip out was to the Garlic Farm, which has an excellent restaurant with, of course, a garlic themed menu. Highly recommend staying in this very special place for an Isle of Wight vacation, with or without children.”

“A wonderful place to stay for the whole family. The Mission was beautiful inside and out – we’ve never stayed anywhere like it. What an amazing experience! It’s so beautifully decorated and styled it’s like being in a magazine. Great location especially for Black Gang Chine and wonderful food walking distance at The Wight Mouse. Would highly recommend and stay again.”
