The Floating Terrarium Botanical houseboat in Hackney, London
A wow-factor, off-grid garden sanctuary in the form of a wide beam barge, rich in eco-friendly luxury and gloriously secluded on a glistening canal in uber-cool Hackney.
  • Sleeps: 2
  • Bedroom: 1
  • Bathroom: 1
  • Minimum stay: 1 night

Boasting over 150 plants (yes, really!) The Floating Terrarium is a luxurious oasis in the hip, bustling London Borough of Hackney.

A proud recipient of Airbnb’s coveted OMG! Fund, in which grants were awarded to create the “quirkiest, most mind-bending holiday rentals”, the floating off-grid haven is the brainchild of designer Mia Powell.

Together with help from eco-conscious brands including Lick Paint and Patch Plants – not to mention her Dad! – Mia set about building, crafting, and styling the dazzlingly unique space herself.

Pet-friendly and sleeping up to two guests, the result is akin to actual botanical heaven. Alongside solar panels and a compost loo sit breath-taking ‘living walls’, reclaimed wooden gym floors, nature-hued furnishings, and lush tropical plants… with eye-catching trapezium-shaped windows and a skylight to make you feel like you’ve just stepped into the sun-drenched Garden of Eden.

What of the on-board facilities? Well, there’s a shower to freshen up in, a rear deck for al fresco cocktail-quaffing, and a generous open-plan living and kitchen space for relaxing and meal-prepping. Equipped with everything from an air fryer to an induction hob, you’ll have everything you could need…

…though with some of Hackney’s best dining spots accessible in a five-minute stroll, you might choose to let someone else do the cooking, instead!

You’ll also have a downy kingsize bed to curl up in after a hard day of exploring the city’s never-ending delights – or simply grabbing a good book and finding a cosy green snuggle-space onboard – as the canal rocks you gently into a sound night’s sleep.

More information

Oh, and there’s even a Nest-controlled central heating system, for chilly evenings spent hunkering down with a board game and a bottle of wine. During colder months, you’ll find your floating sanctuary perfectly pre-warmed for your arrival.

Fancy snuggling up and getting cosy with some onboard entertainment? Well, we’ve just the ticket: you’ll find a projector onboard which you can connect to a laptop (apple adapter also included). Switch this on to watch movies in the bow area of the boat… why not lay on the bench for optimum viewing?

All that’s left to do is decide exactly how you’ll spend your holiday time! For starters, Mia will be happy to furnish you with a personalised location guide – just ask.

If you’re doing things under your own steam, you could start by checking out the many places to eat, drink, and be merry in the local area… some of which are dotted along the canal itself.

There’s also a range of local events, activities and excursions available to whet your appetite for culture and adventure alike (think buzzy makers’ markets, kayaking and axe-throwing to name just a few) before you settle in for another gloriously lush evening on The Floating Terrarium.
