At Sound of Harris, it really is possible to have it all… Deluxe self-catering accommodation. Stunning architecture blending tradition and innovation. Incredible mid-century interior design, celebrating the ‘best of British’. A commitment to sustainability. Finally, an awe-inspiring location on the Outer Hebrides for a true sense of escape. In truth, there isn’t much Sound of Harris doesn’t offer!
Located on the beautiful Isle of Harris, Sound of Harris comprises of The Other House and was lovingly designed and built by owners Rob and Carol. Sound of Harris was even awarded the 2016 Outer Hebrides Design Award for the best self-design new build. The home provides private, peaceful and stylish accommodation for two adults.
With an emphasis on achieving light and space, the results are open-plan living areas, vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows (perfect for indulging in breath-taking views!). The house itself is based on a classic croft house, updated for sustainability. Triple-glazed windows, solar thermal hot water and the latest technology in energy-efficient ventilation gives the home outstanding green credentials.
The masterpiece continues inside with carefully sourced and restored mid-century furniture. Including pieces from celebrated British designers R.W. Toothill, Elliots of Newbury and Guy Rogers, everything comes together to create a comfortable, modernist vibe. In a celebration of the island’s most famous export, Harris Tweed features heavily throughout, including bespoke tweeds woven by Donald John Mackay of Luskentyre.
Guests can also enjoy the added luxury of high-quality technology in the kitchen and living room, including Smeg fridges, ovens by Stoves, Dualit appliances, satellite TV and a sound system featuring recently refurbished and upgraded vintage 80s pieces such as Rotel and Marantz. And at the end of the day, you can enjoy a little more indulgence thanks to the bathroom’s rainfall shower and Japanese soaking tub – large enough for two!
The Other House offers luxury on modest scale. Calm, comfortable and cosy, you’ll feel at utter peace as you gaze out towards the islets of Gilsay, Lingay and Groay to the hills of North Uist.

Nature lovers will adore the abundance of local wildlife, including harbour porpoises, common dolphins and grey seals in The Sound (you might even be lucky enough to spot them from your living room!). Look out for otters playing in the kelp at low tide, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for Toe Head’s breeding pair of golden eagles while you’re out climbing the slopes of Cheapabhal.
Take some time to explore the various art galleries and craft shops around the island, and be sure to take some Harris Tweed home with you. Foodies will love the opportunity to dine on fresh, local seafood such as langoustine, lobster, crab, and scallops which the owners can source for guests – or partake in a spot of rock fishing for pollock and mackerel to enjoy one of the freshest meals you’ve ever had!
