A jaw-dropping treehouse and certified Amazing Space, with a roof that opens out to the treetops and the UK’s darkest skies, blissfully secluded in Northumberland’s mesmerising Kielder Water and Forest Park
  • Sleeps: 4
  • Bedrooms: 2
  • Bathroom: 1
  • Minimum stay: 3 nights

If you’re going to build a show-stopping treehouse with a roof that opens out to the stars, Northumberland is the best possible place. Here, Kielder Water and Forest Park not only boasts the largest man-made lake in Northern Europe, but the UK’s largest working forest and England’s first International Dark Sky Park.

(Translation: the views will be spectacular!)

And if Sky Den looks a tad familiar, it could be because you’ve seen it on the popular TV show, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. Deftly crafted by George Clarke and designer William Hardie, the unique treehouse boasts furniture that folds into the walls and a toasty wood-burning stove, as well as that iconic open-up roof.

“Part treehouse, part art installation” is how an awed George Clarke described their completed project, and you’re certain to agree! Better still, this is a retreat absolutely everyone can enjoy, with accessible spaces and facilities built right in, and extra room for a baby as a fifth guest.

The main living area – known as The Square – is at ground level, which opens out to a beautiful balcony. Here you’ll find clever fold-away furniture that transforms into a dining area or accessible twin bedroom layout, almost as if by magic. Oh, and there’s also a compact, well-equipped kitchen for easy mealtimes, along with a level-entry wet room for freshening up.

On sunny evenings, take your seat in The Circle: an al fresco (and accessible) seating and dining area positioned above a free-flowing stream. There’s a wood-burning stove for extra warmth as you chat well into the night, stream and bubbles flowing!

The Triangle is Sky Den’s appropriately-named upper sleeping area, accessed by stairs and accommodating up to two guests in a double bed or two singles. Simply open up that roof for a spectacular star-scape to help ease you into a deep, dreamy night of slumber.

More information

Tip: though bedding is supplied, if you’ve brought extra sleeping bags (highly recommended) you can also opt to bed down in The Circle, and be gently lulled to sleep by the sounds of the stream.

After a hearty home-cooked breakfast, why not explore your surroundings? Sky Den is secluded at Calvert Kielder, a friendly, fully-inclusive holiday site dedicated to relaxation and fresh-air adventure for all. Here you can climb, swing, or go ziplining to your hearts’ content, set off to sail, or even take a calming buggy ride through the forest.

Don’t worry if all that sounds like a little too much effort, as you’ve always got the option of keeping an eye on the local wildlife instead. Home to roe deer, moles, foxes, ospreys and countless more birdlife, there’s always something – or someone! – new to spot.

Things to note

Please note that external lighting is limited due to the site being part of a designated Dark Sky Park, so a torch is recommended. Some activities and site facilities must be pre-booked and are chargeable, available from 1st March to 30th November each year. Please see the property website for full accessibility information in the treehouse and on site.
