Enjoy the natural beauty of Tasmania all to yourselves, from the architect-designed comfort of your very own private island.

Set within Tasmania’s awe-inspiring Freycinet National Park, Picnic Island features a dramatic backdrop of pink granite mountains, white-sand beaches and vast, ever-changing skies.

With an exclusive group stay on the private island, you can experience this spectacular natural beauty all to yourselves.

Your island home is a sumptuous copper-clad retreat, cleverly designed by renowned architect John Latham to resemble a local boatshed. Sleeping up to ten guests, you’ll find five spacious kingsize bedrooms inside, all of which can be made into singles if needed.

The simply-designed bedrooms are expertly cantilevered over the water, meaning you can listen to the waves lapping gently beneath you as you drift off to sleep, and awake to that amazing seascape.

Each room also leads you out onto scenic decking, with plenty of chairs and cushions to make yourselves comfy.

There are roomy kitchen, dining and living spaces too, flanked by huge windows that flood the house with daylight (as well allowing you to gaze wistfully across to the mountains as you cradle your morning coffee).

As you might expect, the furniture and fittings are seriously special. Along with a skilled team of local craftspeople, the award-winning designer Jackson Wells was drafted in to add a touch of simple, polished style.

More information

(In fact, the talking point of the house has to be the stunning suspended fireplace in the living area, with a large, historic sandstone convict brick at its hearth).

Meanwhile, you’ll find the walls adorned with local creativity, with several artists-in-residence commissioned to create exclusive works around the island throughout the year.

Learn more about the island and the local environment in the thoughtfully-provided library area, packed with reference books…or simply curl up with your favourite bestseller.

If you prefer getting out and about, a great place to start is Wineglass Bay, a magnificent soft-sand beach often quoted as one of the best in the world.

Hosted activities are available throughout your stay, including kayaking, hiking, yoga, photography and cookery. If you’re a keen birdwatcher, you can even opt for a stay dedicated to learning more about the abundant birdlife on the island.

Of course, you’ve always got the option to simply relax, watch out for visits from the local dolphins, seals and penguins, then dine by yet another spectacular sunset (if you’re lucky, the colourful Aurora Australis will dance across the night sky too).
