Orchard Barns
Orchard Barns
A luxury duo of architect-designed, A-rated eco-retreats with jaw-dropping views of wide open countryside and big-sky sunsets from the heart of an ancient East Sussex village.
  • Sleeps: 2, 4 or 6
  • Bedrooms: 2 or 3
  • Bathrooms: 1 or 2
  • Minimum stay: 2-7 nights

Orchard Barns were specifically crafted to maximise the incredible big-sky rural scenery from their prime position in the ancient East Sussex village of Cowbeech.

Both architect-designed retreats are west-facing, so whichever you choose, you can be assured of the most spectacular sunset views over expansive, wide-open fields… a sight to soothe the weariest souls!

Better still, both retreats are A-rated for environmental efficiency, with added insulation and solar panels that mean they produce more power than they consume – an ideal choice for holidaymakers with a conscience.

The larger of the two, Mareda sleeps up to four guests in a cosy twin or kingsize bedroom and a kingsize sleeping mezzanine, whose stargazing skylight runs the entire width of the bed. When it’s finally time for sleep, the blind can be closed at the mere touch of a button, leaving you free to drift off to a soft, soothing soundtrack of owls’ hoots.

The sociable, comfortably-furnished living and dining area is characterised by soaring ceilings that allow plenty of space and natural light, and there’s an open-plan kitchen for mealtimes, complete with a microwave convection oven and dishwasher.

Outside awaits a large wooden deck for lounging on sunny afternoons, with a firepit that cleverly converts to a barbecue for sizzling suppers. There’s also a fenced-off meadow beyond, which is shared between Mareda and the smaller retreat, Russet.

(Note that while cleverly-positioned screens and fences ensure plenty of privacy and separation between the two adjoining properties, they can also be booked together to sleep six guests in total).

What the guests of Orchard Barns say

“The eco-home was clean, modern and contained everything we needed for our 3-4 day stay. The location and atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for. The large window door has a beautiful view of the countryside and there were some great field walks. Robert and Natasha were excellent hosts who provided us with some complementary food and drink, along with helping us find a last minute taxi the night before NYE and even kindly invited us in for a drink during their private NYE event. Also, the beds are super comfortable and cosy!”

“Beautiful environment! The place was exactly like the pictures, very cosy with modern furniture. Robert was very helpful, kind and gave a warming welcome. It’s only a short drive away from the beach and there was a lovely quaint pub right next door, which also had a lovely atmosphere. All in all my stay was very pleasant, making it a nice peaceful get away. Thank you for having me. Will definitely book again.”

“What a lovely, restful, cosy place to stay with a really cool eco vibe! Everything was top quality and the space was so comfortable and convenient and beautifully designed. I slept up on the mezzanine in a very comfortable king size bed and had a stunning view of the stars. I loved the art on the walls, all done by local artists. Robert was a super helpful and friendly host and the pub was just at the end of the garden! What more could one wish for? I will definitely be coming back.”
