If you’re in need of a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, you will find your sanctuary at Portland Bill, on the sweeping World Heritage Jurassic Coast of Dorset. Here, you’ll discover a peaceful Grade II listed cottage, situated beside the beautifully restored Old Higher Lighthouse, a much-loved 18th century beacon.
The setting is perfectly picturesque, with a celebrated history, too – this was once the home of Dr. Marie Stopes, receiving such illustrious visitors as George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells and Thomas Hardy…so can you imagine any better backdrop to inspire your own creative imagination as you luxuriate in your fresh, natural surroundings?
Branscombe Lodge sleeps up to 4 people (or can be booked together with Stopes Cottage to sleep a total of 8), and you’ll feel immediately at home as you arrive, with plenty of light, clean-lined décor and comfortable furnishings throughout. The cottage really makes the most of the surrounding coastal views, with upside-down living that enables you to enjoy the panoramic scenery from windows on all sides in the first-floor living and dining area. On the ground floor, you’ll find a cosy double and twin bedroom, a well-equipped kitchen and a beautiful bathroom.
Guests can enjoy shared access to the lighthouse tower and observatory, which is a real holiday treat! From here, you will be able to savour the most breathtaking views of the Jurassic Coast, not to mention the star-studded night sky in all its glory.
Alternatively, why not open a glass of bubbles to enjoy in the shared Jacuzzi or lawned garden, or go for a luxurious swim in the outdoor heated pool – a wonderful experience whatever the weather! The owner of the cottages is able to provide you with a range of in-home therapies including reflexology, spiritual and crystal healing, or Emotional Freedom Technique if you’re in the mood for even deeper relaxation during your blissful break.
By day, a ramble along the rugged coastline can’t be beaten for clearing away those cobwebs and inspiring a feeling of invigorating reconnection. Bird watching opportunities are all around with the Portland Bird Observatory, and a short stroll will lead you to The Bill itself, with its three lighthouses, a friendly café and local pub providing the perfect pit stop.
Those in need of more energetic ways to spend their time will find an array of watersports on offer locally, plus some wonderful climbing areas that will turn your holiday into a real adventure. Sandy beaches are in plentiful supply at Weymouth, just 9 miles away, and you’ll also find a lovely selection of pubs, shops and restaurants in nearby Easton and Fortuneswell.
