Lowfield House Lake District group stays
A much-loved, multi-generational family home with a hot tub and unique wildlife-themed art, beautifully secluded in an idyllic Lake District valley for a memorable break with your favourite people (and dogs!).
  • Sleeps: 10
  • Bedrooms: 5
  • Bathrooms: 5
  • Minimum stay: 3-7 nights

Lowfield House is gloriously secluded in Little Langdale; a mesmerising, culture-rich Lake District valley that sings with history whilst feeling blissfully untouched by time.

Surrounding by breathtaking Cumbrian Fells and scenery, including Lingmoor, Wetherlam and Wrynose Pass, the historic and much-loved home has been refurbished with high-end fixtures and fittings, for a group break filled with beauty and comfort.

Up to ten guests can relax and unwind here, with five ensuite bedrooms to choose from and a wealth of sociable spaces for catch-up conversations fuelled with laughter. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome to stay – they’ll even get their very own welcome pack and a large, secure garden to run around in – so there’s no need for anyone to stay at home.

The house was originally built in 1967 amongst vast mature gardens, by the grandparents of current owner James. His parents kept Lowfield as a family holiday home, and years later James and his brother Richard both proposed to their wives at Lowfield. Now a stunning example of modern architecture, Lowfield has undergone extensive remodelling and modernisation, yet remains very much a family home.

There’s an instantly welcoming atmosphere as soon as you arrive, with cherished antique furnishings and books throughout – though modern additions include sleek indoor appliances and a scenic outdoor terrace with a garden sofa and a stargazing hot tub. There’s also a stunning red squirrel sculpture, especially created by a local artist and installed on the stump of a Norway Spruce that was once the family’s Christmas tree, to greet your arrival (keep your eyes peeled for real red squirrels, too!)

Luxuriate in the main living space, with its jaw-dropping views to the garden and valley beyond – as the kids play or watch TV in the family room. There’s a cosy snug to curl up with a good book in, and a contemporary dining table to break bread around together.

Whip up family-sized feasts in the well-equipped kitchen, with its six-ring hob, double oven, and chef-worthy preparation island – then, after your slap-up meal, choose your favourite of the five individually-styled en-suite rooms: two superkings, one king-size, and two twin rooms (with standard double beds rather than singles). Two of the bedrooms boast a large feature bathtub – ideal for those who enjoy long, scenic bubble-soaks.

More information

If you’re heading out, the Three Shires Inn is a 300m walk away and an absolute must-visit: a dog-friendly, traditional slate inn that was once owned and run by James’s grandparents, the original builders of Lowfield House.

(In 2024 James realised a lifelong ambition and managed to buy the Three Shires Inn back into the family. As a result, all Lowfield guests enjoy at 20% discount on food and drink at the Shires, as it’s known locally!) There are plenty more pubs and restaurants to sample in the local area, too.

If Lowfield were a chalet in the Alps it would be described as ‘ski in ski out’ but as it’s in the lakes it really is ‘walk in walk out’, as there’s an abundance of beautiful walks to be taken right from the doorstep! Plentiful circular routes take in iconic landmarks, such as Slater’s Bridge, Hodge Close Quarry – a popular filming location named as one of Britain’s scariest caves, the Cathedral cave and Blea Tarn… infamous in wild swimming circles.

For the more adventurous there is direct access to the surrounding fells, many of which are classified as Wainwrights – the 214 English peaks known locally as fells. There are plenty of traditional Lake District activities to indulge in too, from Windermere or Coniston Lake cruises to visiting the home of Beatrix Potter, before unwinding to another spectacular sunset at Lowfield House.

Things to note

Free EV charging is available at the property. Please note that a refundable deposit will be required if bringing your dogs to stay.
