With all the charm and magic of a forest fairy tale, Honeydown invites you to enjoy some precious time living among nature in your own secluded spot of an oak woodland brimming with wildlife.

Here you’ll discover a generously spaced selection of lovingly hand-crafted, dome-shaped wooden retreats. Affectionately known as ‘Truffles’, each one is furnished for cosy comfort and off-grid relaxation.

Sleeping two adults (with space for up to two children in three of the Truffles), you’ll find your unique Truffle furnished with a solid wood double bed, snug bedding, upcycled ‘drum’ table and chairs, and a wood-burning stove for chilly nights.

Relax under the curved ‘patchwork’ ceiling with a good book and a well-deserved glass of your favourite tipple in a snug hammock (enough space for two!) by the window. You might even find yourselves hoping for a downpour, so you can watch the raindrops blur and trickle down the curved window… open the door and breathe, is there any fresher scent than rain-soaked woodland?

But if the sun is shining, you’ll find a hammock waiting for you outside, too, along with sheltered areas that are perfectly equipped for al fresco feasting. Or explore the woodland and lose yourself in the quiet of the trees. A quarter of the site has been left to nature, so there’s plenty to find, from wild orchids, shimmering ponds, and ancient hedge banks to buzzards and woodpeckers. Find a shady spot by the stream and enjoy a picnic. The woodland is also home to a family of deer, keep a lookout for them early morning when you wander to the shower.

Each Truffle has its own barbecue and pizza oven to make easy work of hearty evening meals under a canopy of trees. There is also a handy gas hob for your morning coffee.

A short amble through the woodland and you will find the cabin which houses your private bathroom with a ‘proper’ loo, hot shower and eco products for your use. Your own kitchen space is also here, with a fridge and power socket.

More information

You are a short walk from the historic market town of Hatherleigh. Here you’ll find two friendly pubs and a busy little café (which also does takeaway cream tea for that picnic in the wood…). The neighbouring farm has a café, a shop full of local produce and refill milk station. If you’d rather stay put then there are many options for local produce hampers which will be delivered to your Truffle door.

There are also plenty more charming towns and villages to visit. If you enjoy longer walks and cycling routes then you’re in luck: the Tarka Trail is a mere stone’s throw away. Bicycle hire can easily be arranged for you.

Honeydown is perfectly positioned equally between moor and coast. A short drive will take you to Dartmoor in one direction for walking, wild swimming and pony spotting or head the other way for some of England’s very finest surfing beaches. Bude is a favourite beach for Honeydown visitors with its stunning sea pool, surf lessons or canoeing on the canal.

Then at the end of the day, return to your Truffle, light your campfire, and watch the stars emerge through the whispering canopy of trees.
