Privately nestled on the shores of Ullswater, the second-largest lake in the Lake District, Duke of Portland occupies the perfect location for a romantic escape.

A sumptuously converted boathouse, there’s plenty of luxurious attention to detail inside, including a large, snuggly sofa positioned by the wood-burner (and TV, if you need it!) an indulgent slipper bath with fluffy robes provided, and a kingsize bed positioned by a stargazing window.

But we think it’s the balcony you’ll love the most. Boasting mesmerising panoramic views over the lake and out to the fells, it’s the perfect spot for sunrise-watching over fresh coffee, or an al fresco sunset supper quite unlike any other. 

Although you’re within a short walk of the village of Pooley Bridge, with its parade of shops, restaurants and cafés, you may well decide to stay delightfully put – dipping your toes into the gentle water, or fishing from your private jetty – instead.
