A 19th century Cornish clifftop fortress for two, romantically secluded on the windswept Port Quin headland with mesmerising sea views in every direction

Doyden Castle boasts a lively history. Envisioned by an infamous 19th century bon viveur named Samuel Symons, the miniature medieval-style fortress was built especially for his raucous parties and celebrations!

These days, the Cornish clifftop retreat is a perfect romantic escape, with sea views from arched windows and a roaring open fire to warm evenings spent chatting over a bottle of wine. And with no telephone or Wi-Fi at the castle (nearby Doyden House has a phone for outgoing calls if needed) you can relax and reconnect in blissful peace.

Luxurious facilities include a well-equipped kitchen with a SMEG fridge and an induction hob for whipping up sumptuous suppers, to be savoured at the window-side dining table. Morning coffee can be enjoyed outside on sunny mornings, and there’s an elegant shower room to freshen up in after long, breezy walks along the South West Coast Path.

In the mood for a coastal hike? Continue on to quaint Port Isaac, and to Polzeath for surfing, or Padstow for pure foodie heaven.

Whatever option you choose, you’re free to indulge and enjoy this beautiful part of Cornwall to your hearts’ content (just as Samuel Symons would have liked!) before heading back to Doyden Castle to watch the sun melt into the shimmering sea beyond.
