Corylus (Latin for the restorative hazel tree) comprises two bespoke timber retreats, created by a small family team of architectural designers and builders with emphasis on beauty and sustainability.

Both retreats are peacefully elevated together, facing south on a hillside above Ullapool for the most incredible big-sky views across Loch Broom to the hills and mountains beyond. It’s the perfect place for relaxation, reconnection, and soul-revival in a sublime natural setting.

Choose from Fjell, a one-bedroom apartment that looks east (ideal for watching glimmering sunrises over the loch) or Fjord, which has two bedrooms and looks west for capturing those magnificent Highland sunsets. For slightly larger groups, both apartments can be booked together to sleep a total of six guests.

Whichever you opt for, you’ll be greeted with refreshingly simple, streamlined interiors that maximise the spectacular views while offering plenty of luxury. You’ll have Wi-Fi, a Smart TV and sleek Bluetooth bedroom-speakers, but there’s also a ready supply of books and games for those who prefer to leave the digital world behind.

Enormous windows and glass doors frame the landscape to showstopping perfection, while natural materials include birch plywood, stone, and timber cladding, to help you feel perfectly at one with your surroundings.

On sunny days – in fact, even on rainy ones – you’ll have the option of wandering out to your covered deck with a chilled glass of wine or hot toddy, chatting with your loved ones under the ever-changing sky. There’s plenty of space to dine al fresco if you’re in the mood, while back inside, triple-glazed windows and underfloor heating warm cool evenings up a treat.

As the night draws further in, whip up Highland feasts in the gleaming kitchen, equipped with high-end Miele appliances… and a welcome hamper packed with organic teas, fresh coffee, and a few local delicacies.

Bedrooms boast premium mattresses and cotton sheets, with blackout blinds for sound, silent nights of slumber. You’ll also have a walk-in shower for invigorating morning freshen-ups (as well as pre-bedtime soaks in Fjord’s large L-shaped bath), complete with natural toiletries.

You wouldn’t be blamed for refusing to leave your Highland sanctuary all holiday long – a choice made by the vast majority of guests! Yet for those in the mood to wander, the village is a mere 20-minute walk (or a short drive) away, with access to shops and the pretty harbour.

What else? Mesmerising nature-trails start practically from your door, while steeper hikes will reward you with wow-factor views out towards the Summer Isles. Assynt and Coigach are prime destinations for scenic drives, or head south to Gairloch and Torridon for deserted beaches and mountain scenery to make you swoon in wonder.
