Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002, and now featured on “The World’s Most Secret Hotels” on TV’s Channel 4, the striking 790-foot-long Canfranc Estación was one of the largest and most spectacular railway stations in Europe.

Named the “Titanic of the Mountains” on its opening in 1928, the cathedral-like building is nestled in a remote, scenic hamlet in the Aragonese Pyrenees, close to the Spanish and French border. Now an impossibly luxurious hotel, its striking Beaux-Arts-style architecture (inspired by the palaces of France) remains mesmerisingly intact, for a stay that’s first-class all the way.

Flexibly configured mountain-view rooms and suites each boast fine wood and brass fittings, rich fabrics, and refined Art Deco accessories, for an elegant journey back in time. There’s a wellness spa for sublime relaxation, and a magnificent Michelin-starred restaurant set within a vintage railway coach. Here you can sample the delights of Aragonese haute cuisine, expertly crafted from sustainable local produce.

While you may choose not to leave – which would be perfectly understandable! – the winter-snow-capped Somport Pass is just outside the door, as are the hiking trails of the Western Valleys Natural Park. You could also arrange ski lessons in nearby Astún or Candanchú, before savouring a well-deserved glass of Champagne in the hotel’s heady library cocktail bar. Cheers.
