Part of Jersey’s only National Park, St. Ouen’s Bay stretches out for mile after sandy mile along the island’s sweeping west coast.
Barge Aground (also known as Seagull) is a unique, boat-shaped folly that occupies prime, peaceful viewing position from the bay, with direct beach access and uninterrupted views across the shimmering Atlantic Ocean.
In other words, it’s the perfect retreat for anyone in need of a dreamy coastal escape… well-behaved dogs included!
Rich in historic tales, the folly was originally designed and built in the 1930s. Once used as a canteen by German occupying forces during World War Two, its former lives also include a speech-therapy clinic and a camping base for the Scouting Association.
Sleeping up to six guests, you’ll find two twin bedrooms with adult-sized bunks in the barge’s stern, and a comfy double sofa bed in the prow. Facilities include a well-equipped kitchen (dishwasher included) and shower room, while the spacious, sociable lounge and diner are perfect for catch-up conversations over drinks.
With no distracting Wi-Fi – though you’ll find a TV and DVD player to help keep you entertained if needed – you’re blissfully free to breathe out, relax, and reconnect with those people you love the most.
These pastimes become even better when you open the doors on a sun-soaked afternoon and head out onto the large terrace… perhaps with a cheeky cocktail in hand! We’re willing to bet that you won’t want to head back inside until you’ve caught the very last of those awe-inspiring, big-sky sunset views over the bay.

What the guests of Barge Aground say
“We have just had a wonderful week at Barge Aground – we had a sunny week and loved soaking up the sunsets and swimming on the beach in front of the property. It is great location for enjoying the fabulous beaches of the West coast of Jersey. It was our 7th time visiting the property and we were very impressed with the new furniture and TV – although the majority of our time was spent on the terrace enjoying the view and the new outside seating. We will definitely be back!”
“From the very first telephone contact (Laura) the staff at Jersey Heritage could not have been more professional and helpful. The property itself is in an amazing location, set amid the dunes on St Ouen’s Bay. It feels removed from the stresses of everyday life, whilst still being easy to get to & from (we had a car) and with lovely eateries close by and striking distance (by car) to food shops. We would have been content just sitting on the terrace and watching the sea, the surfers & dog walkers for hours on end! The property is beautifully furnished and very well-equipped. No wi-fi – but that was one of the reasons we chose it & there was a good 4G signal if you are desperate to keep in touch with the outside world. (Please don’t change this Jersey Heritage – was lovely to be without wi-fi – especially travelling with a teenager! Who I may add, did not miss it one bit!) The documentation had advised that there was “very limited” TV reception, but we did not find that to be the case and enjoyed catching up with the Olympics when we felt the urge. The bunk beds were very comfortable – we decided to “bunk” rather than use the sofa bed – to enter into the spirit of the Barge! We had come prepared with fairy liquid/dishwasher tabs/hand soap etc, but we really appreciated that these small incidentals were provided – it did make it feel like a home from home & we felt super comfortable within minutes of arriving. Going to sleep to the sound of the waves and waking to the same will be a memory we will treasure for a long time & we will return! Many many thanks.”
“Had a staycation here with a pal and our kids. So much fun, great location. We had all we needed and more with this place. We can’t wait to try another heritage let out for our next staycation.”
