How about being transported back to the heady days of the ‘20s and ‘30s, surrounded by opulent décor, art deco architecture, and unspoiled views of the English seaside? Yes, it’s possible, as this is exactly what Art Deco House UK promises, and more besides!
Located in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, Art Deco House UK dates back to 1929. With many original features, including wood panelling, parquet floors, a sweeping staircase and stunning stained glass windows, the house has been lovingly furnished with period pieces to evoke the style and glamour of the era.
Large enough to accommodate twelve adults and five children, the house is the perfect place to celebrate a special birthday, anniversary – or even a wedding. Guests have compared the house with something from an Agatha Christie novel, and once you’re settled into the splendid drawing room, which has seen a complete 1930’s restoration in March 2022, it’s easy to see why. Leather sofas, a table that converts into a card table and 1930s artwork send you straight back to the days of Poirot and Marple. There’s even a walnut cocktail cabinet said to have come from the Elstree Studios’ set for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
The kitchen, with its three independent ovens and large gas hob, is certainly sufficient for catering for large groups. Sleekly finished in classic monochrome, the central island doubles up as a breakfast bar, making for sociable mornings over fresh juice and coffee, while French doors open onto the impeccably manicured garden, with outdoor seating for 18, a BBQ area and spectacular ponds.
Entertain like Gatsby himself under magnificent chandeliers in the wood-panelled dining room. Every detail has been attended to in here for authenticity, from the period ornaments and glassware to an original 1930s clock still marking time. Even a SONOS speaker has been hidden within a 1930s radio; it’s just down to you to choose your soundtrack for the evening – some Benny Goodman or Duke Ellington, perhaps…?
“Work at home, our home” is a room enabling the ‘workcation’, with two wonderful 1930’s desks looking directly out to sea (excellently furnished, with comfortable modern chairs of course!). A high specification monitor is provided, just plug in your laptop and you’re ready to clear those emails!
Five generously sized bedrooms upstairs, and the Morning Room downstairs, which can be used as a sixth bedroom, provide ample room for everyone. Families are especially welcome at Art Deco House UK; the Family Bedroom can sleep five, and several of the other rooms have additional single beds plus space for a cot.

What the guests of Art Deco House UK say
“We go away as a group of friends every New Year. It’s increasingly difficult to find properties to suit our mix of children and adults but this worked brilliantly. There was enough space for the adults and children to separate. All the right kitchen equipment including two ovens so that we could cook enough food to feed everyone and the location was fabulous, particularly with the path at the end of the garden meaning we could walk down to the beach. The house was decorated for Christmas and felt very homely. The house manager was extremely friendly and just a phone call away when we had a very minor issue – immediately resolved. Would love to see the house in a different season so that we could make the most of the fantastic outside space and sun rooms. If you do stay here we would recommend the Salix Beach Cafe, which is a pleasant walk and doable for our 5 year old. Food was good and the service was fab, despite our sudden take over with a party of 18!”
“From that glorious moment of being welcomed in to the amazing Art Deco House for the first time by the Karen (House Manager), to closing the door at the end of the long weekend it was a perfect family event in a fantastic home. Lawrence and Sharon have done a stunning job of reviving the house in the period style, AND managed to make it a very usable, homely and luxurious space. We had a large party from teenage to late 80s who all loved it for different reasons. The views are incredible, rooms so spacious and the sound system – quite a marvel. All of this kept the whole party happy, amused and fascinated for the whole visit. We enjoyed the indoors so much we had to force ourselves to make the best of the local/natural resources too. The cliff-top walk is accessed directly through the garden gate; the Hideaway cafe (towards Shanklin) is also a gem – tiny, cozy with such a wide range of food and drink. It’s easy to get down to the beach level and the walkway from Shanklin to Sandown. The weather was surprisingly good, which meant the Sun Room and garden table even got some use. Thank you so much for the starter ‘hamper’ – which was ideal to give us time to settle in. I can’t wait to find another excuse to book in to celebrate something!”
“I stayed here with family to mark my 50th birthday. We’d been stunned by the photos and descriptions of the house, but the reality exceeded these. An absolutely beautiful place, as is clear, but this beauty isn’t at the expense of it also being a comfortable, welcoming and very well appointed place to stay. Great location – lovely to pop out of the garden gate and straight onto the coast path – and beautiful views out to sea from most of the bedrooms.”
