The Stonehouses – otherwise known as Curved Stone House and Treetop House – are a pair of 5-star holiday retreats just ten minutes walk from the centre of Ullapool. Sculpted from stone, turf and grass, each one offers a luxurious base from which to explore this wonderful area. Boasting unbeatable views across Loch Broom, and with the added indulgence of a sauna in each, they’re sure to make your holiday unforgettable.
Designed by Hebridean architect Stuart Bagshaw, and built by owners Gavin and Rachel and their team of local craftspeople, the Stonehouses reflect a love and care which is clear from first sight. The natural materials used in their construction blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment, and the latest green technology means each house has outstanding eco-credentials.
Curved Stone House sleeps four in modern, spacious surroundings. The large living area, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, is the perfect place to soak up those beautiful views, while a private outdoor terrace means you can make the most of them in fine weather. The spacious double bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom with a luxurious, free-standing bath, while the second bedroom, which can be made up as a twin or double, has its own shower/WC and direct access to the large family bathroom.
For smaller groups, Treetop House sleeps three between a double room and single room, but offers the same spacious luxury and indulgent touches of Curved Stone House. So called for its location on the edge of a gorge, Treetop House is where you can enjoy almost 360-degree views of the mountain, stream, sea and the Summer Isles. Take it all in as you gaze across the top of the forest, where a tangle of rowan, ash and birch trees make for a magnificent sight in autumn.
Regardless of which house you choose, enjoy the luxury of your own private sauna – yet another element that sets the Stonehouses apart from the rest. And even when you’re not in the steam, you’ll notice both houses are kept beautifully warm regardless of the weather, thanks to under-floor heating and wood-burning stoves. Eco-friendly solar power heats the hot water, while an LPG backup ensures there’s always enough for an indulgent soak in the tub.
And you’ll need that soak after a day in the Highlands! With the Ullapool Hill Path network on your doorstep, you’re perfectly placed for long, secluded walks in the mountain above Loch Broom. Gaze across to the mountains of Assynt and Coigach, or hire a guide to show you all the best spots in this gorgeous setting. The area is also perfect for sea kayaking (where you could spot seals, otters, even whales and dolphins), as well as fishing. Bring your camera too – this is a landscape you’ll want to look back on for a lifetime!

What the guests of The Stonehouses say
“This was our second stay in this beautiful house. The
location with the stunning view and such an amazing house was the perfect
holiday for us. Gavin and Rachael have thought of everything to make this place
so special and there’s not 1 thing we would change. The location is perfect for
touring around the beautiful beaches etc and if you just want a relaxing day
reading a book and enjoying the view then this is the place to be. We have
booked up for our next stay already and we can’t wait.” (September 2016)
“The Curved
Stone house is by far the best of the many holiday cottages we have ever stayed
in. It is perfectly located in the hill above Ullapool but in easy walking
distance. It blends beautifully into the landscape and is a stunning design.
Every detail has been thought of and it is equipped to the highest possible
quality from the bedding to the crockery. With perfect hosts Rachel and Gavin
this is an outstanding place to stay.” (June 2016)
“Gavin &
Rachel at Stonehouses have ensured every little detail has been considered and
catered for at Treetop House. It is exceptional accommodation that surpasses 5
star. The Scottish Highlands is truly a spiritual place, and Treetop connects
so beautifully with the majesty of the land and the abode truly nurtures the
soul. Will be recommending your little part of paradise to all who will listen,
and look forward to coming back for another visit.” (April 2016)
