Peaceful and secluded, it’s hard to imagine that The Old Melrose Estate has changed much over time.

Situated within a meander of the River Tweed, and perfectly positioned in the heart of the Scottish Borders, you’ll feel delightfully cut off from the rest of the world as you arrive on the centuries-old estate. Yet Edinburgh is a mere hour away by train, and the delights of the Northumberland coast are well within reach.

Not that you’ll be considering where else to go, once you’ve set eyes upon your enchanting, dog-friendly folly-for-two!  Surrounded by soothing woodland, and boasting beautiful river views, you can look forward to greeting your mornings with a soundtrack of joyous birdsong.

Inside awaits an attractively elegant mix of modern and traditional style. You’ll discover plenty of mod-cons throughout, while the original tiled floor and pretty stained-glass windows provide plenty of authentic charm.

Head to the lounge area by evening, where the large stone fireplace and wood-burning stove are sure to make you feel irresistibly cosy. Meanwhile, the country-style kitchen is equipped with everything you’ll need to whip up hearty meals, along with a cheerful breakfast bar for dining. There’s also a cosy window nook that’s ideal for watching the local wildlife, or simply curling up with a good book.

You’ll find a refreshing shower room on the ground floor too, and when it’s time to turn in, just take the spiral staircase to the mezzanine level, where you’ll discover a relaxing double bedroom with a gorgeous sloped ceiling.

When the weather is good, you’ll love chatting lazy afternoons away outside with a drink or two, in the furnished seating area that’s ideally positioned for the best woodland-and-river views.  You’re also just a wander away from the water’s edge, perfect for dipping your toes!

If you’re in the mood for fishing, you can try your luck on your own, or take lessons with the experienced, friendly Ghillie – whichever way you decide to go, the River Tweed is certainly the place for a fine catch.

Later on, stroll to the estate’s tearoom for a welcome cuppa and a slice of cake (feeding the friendly chickens on your way, perhaps!), then lose yourselves in the antique and book shop for a while. You could head up to Scott’s View if you fancy a longer walk, which takes in both the winding river and the stunning Eldon hills.

History buffs will enjoy a trip to Melrose, with its famous twelfth-century abbey. Stock up on provisions while you’re there, from the array of independent shops you’ll find in the bustling town.

Heading back to The Folly at the close of the day will feel as though you’ve entered a calming time capsule once again, as you pour a glass of wine and get ready to catch the blazing sun sinking over the trees.
