A former Cold War army trailer, lovingly transformed into a warm and welcoming shepherd's hut, complete with a wood-fired hot tub for off-grid comfort in rural Worcestershire.
  • Sleeps: 2
  • Bedroom: 1
  • Bathroom: 1
  • Minimum stay: 2-3 nights

Perfect for a romantic couple in need of a rural escape, The Commander’s Caravan is peacefully secluded in a tranquil corner of a three-acre field on a Worcestershire smallholding, in the shelter of the whispering cherry-plum trees.

Just two miles from the market town of Tenbury Wells (affectionately named the “Little Town in the Orchard” by Queen Victoria), you’ll feel blissfully secluded from civilisation, not to mention hectic life back home!

Friendly owners Mhairi and Rob created their off-grid haven themselves, converting a former Cold War army trailer into a rustic, warmly welcoming shepherd’s hut with luxury private facilities.

With an aim to recycle and reuse as much as possible, the renovation work was carried out using wood grown on the farm, with furniture and accessories carefully sourced from auctions and antique emporiums.

Inside the homely haven awaits a downy kingsize bed, soft solar lighting, and a ridiculously cosy seating area by the wood-fired Rayburn… a perfect spot to snuggle up together, with a well-deserved glass of wine.

You’ll also discover a small-but-perfectly-formed kitchen, with a solar-powered fridge and a gas hob (plus the aforementioned Rayburn, of course), and a fold-out table and chairs to help you enjoy those home-cooked romantic suppers.

Oh, and if you feel like treating yourselves to a sumptuous morning feast, all you have to do is ask. Mhairi and Rob are happy to provide you with a continental-style or full English breakfast hamper, stuffed with mouth-watering local ingredients.

More information

There’s a well-equipped shower room just steps away, while the scenic deck is perfect for relaxing, with a wood-fired hot tub that’s also an ideal pick-me-up after a long country hike.

On sunny afternoons, simply grab a deckchair and laze in the field with a good book, to a soundtrack of birdsong and gently rustling leaves (while Mhairi and Rob live on site, they won’t disturb you… though you may see them from time to time as they tend to the resident horses and chickens).

There’s a firepit with barbecue grill for sizzling al fresco suppers, or you could head into Tenbury Wells or Ludlow, and choose a restaurant for a slap-up evening meal you don’t have to cook.

As for other ways to while away your time, there are several enchanting walking trails to take right from the doorstep, but if you don’t feel like travelling too far, there’s a friendly pub in walking distance.

Slightly further afield lie the Shropshire Hills AONB, and there are plenty of historic castles, stately homes, and beautiful gardens to explore in the surrounding area… all of which will keep you occupied until it’s time to relax in the hot tub again!

Things to note

2-night minimum stay, 3 nights during the summer. The owners live on site, but although you may see them tending to the animals from time to time, they will respect your privacy. Pets are not permitted, although the owners have their own 3 dogs on site. There is no Wi-Fi in the hut, but there should be good mobile coverage. You will need to light the Rayburn to heat the hut in cooler weather.

What the guests of The Commander’s Caravan say

“We had a lovely time staying at the Commanders Caravan. Beautifully designed and renovated. We really enjoyed using the Rayburn and the wood fired hot tub. A romantic and serene escape, in a wonderful location. Perfect.”

The caravan was better than anything we could have imagined- it was done so thoughfully and had everything you would need in there. Mhairi would respond fast when we would need anything and soon be there topping up the logs and cleaning the hot tub whenever it was necessary. We really enjoyed the hot tub and it was lovely that Mhairi encouraged us to get all the use that we could out of it. The distance from the house was great as we felt like we were in our own space yet it wasn’t a long trek back to the car for when we would pop out. We felt so comfortable there and would really love to come back again.”

“The prettiest cute accommodation and location, Mhairi was the perfect host so helpful and friendly.”
