It may be a long way to Tipperary, but travelling back to the 16th century is a far shorter journey than you may think!
Secluded within the breathtaking natural landscape of the shimmering Lough Derg, amongst the invigorating backdrop of North Tipperary, you will find the 16th century Black Castle, beautifully steeped in natural history, cultural richness and creative imagination.
Built in the 1500s by the renowned O’Kennedy clan, and named for the dark ivy that used to adorn its walls, parts of the Black Castle’s loving and painstaking restoration is still in process by its passionate and friendly owners, and you can rest assured that the cost of your ‘overknighter’ will help contribute to the preservation of this imposing castle, helping it to live on for many more centuries.
But for now, leave all the stresses of 21st century life far behind, as you travel through the private, traffic-free road that leads to your castle, bordered by a running stream and ancient woodland.
The Black Castle’s Great Hall is your cosy destination, accessible via an authentic 16th century winding stone staircase. Immerse yourselves in history as you take those stairs and enter the magnificent Great Hall, with its vaulted ceiling and opulent windows making it easy to imagine just what it would be like to be in the shoes of a weary ancient traveller, newly introduced to untold luxury and lively festivities!
The atmosphere in the Black Castle is uniquely true to how life genuinely would have been lived over five hundred years ago, with everything you might expect in a 21st century holiday home banished to where it belongs.

The experience is usually offered for one night stays only and is seasonal between May and October.
