Escape all the demands of life, in an historic Norfolk mill set on a remote island, with soothing panoramic views of the River Yare.

If you're looking for a true holiday escape, then Haddiscoe Island might just be your dream destination.

Secluded on the East Norfolk Coast, and forming part of the scenic Norfolk Broads, the island is blissfully set apart from the rest of the world, with no noisy public roads, and access gained only via footpath.

The Grade II listed Red Mill is one of only five dwellings on the main part of the island, originally built in the mid-19th century as a drainage pump. Standing tall and proud, with many of its original features still in tact, the mill cuts an imposing dash as you make your approach along the sleepy four-mile track.

Sleeping up to six guests (and their two well-behaved dogs), accommodation is generously spaced across four floors, complete with stunning panoramic views of the River Yare - just 30 metres away - and out to the Roman remains at Burgh Castle.

The ground floor circular lounge is the ideal spot for everybody to curl up and relax, complete with cosy furniture, a warming fire, and an east-facing window that showcases that wonderful scenery.

(Though if you prefer, you can head out to the large decking area instead, and enjoy the summer sunshine in all its glory!)

You'll find the kitchen on the ground floor too, with its sociable dining table and all the appliances you could need to rustle up a country feast or two.

Head up the main curved staircase to the first floor, where you'll find an irresistibly comfy double bedroom, and continue to the second floor for the second bedroom, which can be conveniently made into a twin or a superking.

While both of these bedrooms boast beautiful views, you'll find the third double bedroom housed in the mill's original cap, complete with the original iron cast that would have once held its sails. As you can imagine, the vista from this room is truly spectacular - so if you can handle the ladder-style stairs needed to access it, this is the one to claim for yourself!

Surrounded by wondrous countryside, grazing cattle and deer, lolloping hares, and the occasional heron, you'll feel as though civilisation is light years away. Though as you're only forty-five minutes away from the bustling city of Norwich, and just half an hour from the coast, you can decide just how much interaction you'd like with the rest of the world while you're away!

Indeed, no-one would blame you if you decided to while away your holiday time simply taking long, undisturbed nature walks, grabbing your binoculars to watch the birds, or taking a book down to the river and watching the boats glide languidly past.

Things to note

Cattle graze on the surrounding marshes from April to September. A supply of 15 litres of bottled water is provided, as the private water supply is not suitable for drinking or cooking. No smoking.  As the property is close to the river, children must be supervised at all times. A travel cot and highchair can be provided on request.

One of the truly local brands in the Original Cottages family.
