Pilot House
Scotland / Drimmin, The Highlands
Full description
A unique aluminium cabin for two, architect designed and perfectly set in the remote Scottish Highlands, for spectacular views over the Sound of Mull.
Occupying a remote, magical position on the north-eastern shore of the Sound of Mull, Drimnin could be described as one of Scotland's best-kept secrets. In other words, it's the perfect setting for an undisturbed, unbelievably scenic getaway.
Rich in tranquillity, yet filled with a quirky sense of fun, Pilot House is the ideal Highlands escape for couples (and their four-legged friend!) looking to get away from all the stresses of life back home, but who also crave something different from a standard country cabin.
The unique, curvy two-storey cabin was expertly designed by Roderick James, a leading architectural practice that specialises in creating sustainable structures. Expertly crafted from aluminium, you'll feel like a submarine captain in your conning tower!
Take your binoculars (or indeed, your camera) out onto the wraparound balcony, which showcases truly breath-taking, 360-degree views over the Sound of Mull, out to Ardnamurchan and Tobermory. It'll be hard to imagine a more idyllic setting for contemplating life over morning coffee.
Inside, you'll discover plenty of cosy, light-filled space to cook, dine, rest, and relax in, all peppered with tranquil views, and colourful, aviation-inspired memorabilia.
To make the most of those views, you'll find your comfy queen bedroom downstairs - although as your downy bed faces a huge window, you'll still wake to mesmerising morning scenery! There's a refreshing shower room downstairs, too.
Simply take the spiral staircase up to the light-filled, scenery-showcasing lounge, which is sumptuously furnished with squishy leather armchairs and a crackling wood-burning stove... perfect for catching up with your loved one over a wee evening dram.
You'll also find a well-equipped kitchen area, flanked by windows that mean you can daydream over treetop views as you brew the kettle, or plan your evening meal. There's even a romantic dining table for two, so you can enjoy the fruits of your culinary labours in suitable style.
(Just in case you feel your creative spirits rise - which is not unusual in such a serene setting! - there's a desk area to help you get started on that novel, and a stack of books on hand for you to get lost in.)
Although you'll feel miles away from civilisation, there's plenty to see and do if you feel like leaving the sanctuary of Pilot House.
You could start by taking the passenger ferry across to Tobermory... which is, of course, famous for its connections with children's TV. Not only is a Womble named after the town, it was also the setting for the popular BBC series of Balamory.
For more grown-up activities, why visit the local distillery, or take those binoculars out on a wildlife-watching excursion? A haven for protected species including white tailed and golden eagles, pine martens, dolphins, and Scottish wildcats, the spellbinding land and water of Drimnin is rich in natural wonder, for a stay that won't be easily forgotten.
