New to Host Unusual: European City Breaks in Planes, Trains and Airstreams

23 March 2018

Who said that city break stays can’t come with that extra quirkiness that you’ve come to expect from Host Unusual? Certainly not us! We’re here to prove these two things are not mutually exclusive, with a trio of exceptional stays close to some of Europe’s most endearing metropolises. Start your adventure with a smooth landing into a converted 747 plane in Stockholm, where you can even stay in the plane’s converted engine! When in Rome, do as the movie stars do and create your own star-studded lair inside a 604 Airstream, just outside of the beguiling and ancient centre. Finally in Bonn, experience an exuberant slice of timewarp fun inside an indoor campground of uniquely styled vehicles, each with a vintage vibe all of its own.

Jumbostay, Stockholm

How many of us have arrived to an airport to stay overnight – in a plane? At the incredible Jumbostay in Sweden that is precisely what you can do! Until now sleeping on a plane has been associated with stiff necks, thin blankets and lack of comfort and personal space, but here you will experience real beds in unique sleeping cabins – including the original Boeing 747’s jet engine rooms, cleverly converted into a cylindrical sleeping space. There are even first-class cabins in the form of two spectacular suites, the Black Box Suite and Cockpit Suite, both offering en-suite bathrooms and mini-bars for that extra decadence. A fascinating observation deck for planespotters also runs the length of the wing of the plane, with full views of the runway and Arlanda Airport’s arrivals and departures. With the cosmopolitan capital of Stockholm just 25 minutes away, you can also easily get your city break fix!

Roma Airstream Park, Rome

Explore Italy’s iconic capital and live the American dream at the same time, with one of Roma Airstream Park‘s unique and distinctive 604 Airstreams. These classic ‘movie star trailers’ are wonderfully styled with contemporary decor and furnishings including sofas and handy dining tables, LED lighting and state-of-the-art climate control, in addition to their own kitchen and private bathrooms, meaning you can be fully self-sufficient. You will even have your very own private terrace with outdoor furniture to enjoy a balmy evening al fresco. The airstreams’ setting is along the Via Flaminia, at the foot of lush Vejo Park, in a dedicated camping village complete with its own swimming pool. This green space still remains well connected to the city, which is just four miles away, leaving you free to immerse yourself in both the history of this ancient city and a relaxed holiday setting.

BaseCamp Bonn

Now for something completely different; an indoor campground with a huge slice of fun, namely a huge space filled with incredibly designed and individually styled vintage caravans! As the name BaseCamp Bonn suggests, your destination is the vibrant city of Bonn in Germany, and the site is conveniently just 6 minutes from the centre on the underground. You’re completely spoilt for choice of accommodation here, with fifteen retro caravans, a tourbus, airstreams, VW Transporters, railway night sleepers… and even a mountain cable car! All  have been lovingly converted with style and panache by famous local TV and film set designer Marion Seul. Some of the themed caravans on offer include ‘Flower Power’, ‘Rockabilly and ‘Safari’ to name just a few, and with such a terrific variety we would be very surprised if there wasn’t something for everyone here!
