New to Host Unusual: an ancient tower, crafty camping, a serene boathouse and eco-dens

27 June 2017

We traverse the length and breadth of the country with some of our latest additions to Host Unusual. In Scotland we take you on a journey of epic historic proportions, through an ancient converted tower and a boathouse flanked by land and water and set in the grounds of a renowned country resort.  Further south we visit two glamping retreats both with expertly handcrafted accommodation; a Welsh retreat with unique ‘dens’ just minutes from the coast, and an adult-only escape with beautifully finished yurts, bell tents and more in a peaceful woodland setting in Devon.

One Cat Farm

Find your own slice of peace and tranquility in the heart of a Welsh wooded valley, yet just 5 minutes from the beach and coast, where you can go in search or dolphins (or fish and chips!).  One Cat Farm epitomises the joys of outdoor living. Think stargazing, hammocks, campfires and lazy evenings spent relaxing in your own little eco-cabin.  The unique ‘dens’ themselves are completely bespoke and hand-crafted by owner Lyndon and you’ll be greeted with fresh bread, flowers and firewood for your wood-burner on arrival – essential ingredients for the great outdoor escape!  The style is Nordic simplicity, and all dens take full advantage of the views out to meadows and ponds – sounds like pure bliss to us.

Fenton Tower

Join a long line of distinguished Scottish royalty with a luxury regal break at Fenton Tower.  This spellbinding 16th century tower certainly has no shortage of historic charm and intrigue, and with 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside, you’ll have a remarkable vantage point to appreciate the wonders of Scotland. Accommodating up to 12 guests in its lavish suites, complete with opulent features such as copper or cast-iron bathtubs, period chairs and Italian-framed beds, you’ll be feeling every bit the King or Queen.  You can even arrive by private helicopters should you wish, as the tower has its own helipad – how’s that for a grand entrance?

Crafty Camping

Welcome to the woodlands of West Devon and an adults-only glampsite where peace and serenity go hand-in-hand with ingenious wood crafted accommodation. Choose from a wide range of uniquely styled dwellings including a tipi, yurts, bell tents and a shepherd’s hut, all offering their own charm and personality. The site also has its own ‘Out of Africa’ kitchen, where you can rustle up a wood-fired pizza perhaps, and enjoy complimentary Dorset cereals and tea. With an ideal spot just 10 miles from the ‘pearl of Dorset’ Lyme Regis, you’ll be perfectly placed to explore some of the south coast’s epic beauty spots. In our opinion a crafty visit to here is just what you need to indulge your creative side.

Leannan Boathouse

We return to Scotland for our final property in this feature; the delightful Leannan Boathouse.  Perched on the shores of a pretty fishing pond, your setting is the country resort of Forbes of Kingennie, and this historic retreat dates back to 1855. The boathouse itself has seen a radical renovation to create a contemporary haven that still evokes its past with features such as stone-clad walls, stone floor and classic dining table. The luxury touches continue with the Jacuzzi and the Tempur mattress, whilst outside you can enjoy an impressive range of resort facilities such as fishing, golf, the onsite maze and even an aquarium!
