There is a certain pedigree to Torquay’s iconic Vane Tower. A strikingly elegant, Grade II listed Italianate villa, the building was originally constructed in the 19th century, supposedly for the first American Ambassador to Britain.
Vane Tower was also once visited by George Bernard Shaw, who based one of his plays – You Never Can Tell – in the beautiful bay.
Expertly renovated for the 21st century, the top two floors of the tower have been transformed into a luxurious two-bedroom penthouse apartment rated 4* by Visit England and receipient of a Gold Award, with truly breathtaking coastal views that stretch all the way out to the rolling hills of Dartmoor.
Head through your private entrance and up two flights of stairs, to be welcomed by a light-flooded, open-plan living and dining area with a scenic backdrop of sea and hill views (and a 40″ Netflix-equipped TV, if you should tire of the natural scenery).
You’ll also find a deluxe harbour-view kitchen equipped with a breakfast bar and that all-important dishwasher, and two refreshing shower rooms.
Winding steps lead you up to the jewel in Vane Tower’s crown – the very top. Twelve windows magnificently showcase those expansive views to their most mesmerising effect, and you can enjoy them from the comfort of your opulent gold king-size bed. A second double bedroom lies just below, also featuring enormous shuttered windows that look out over the bay.
Enjoy morning coffee as you watch boats glide past, the tide roll in, and the ever-changing sky overhead. With binoculars thoughtfully provided for close-ups, just you try tearing yourselves away!
