Perfect for both couples and small families, Twee Gebroeders (‘Two Brothers’) offers a wonderfully unique chance for couples (but up to four guests) to experience life on a Dutch barge without leaving any creature comforts (or the comforts of the quayside) behind. And, as up to three well-behaved dogs can stay too, the whole family can enjoy this beautiful accommodation and its iconic location.
Moored in the shadow of Woodbridge’s famous Tide Mill (one of only two still in operation today), Twee Gebroeders has undergone a loving restoration with no expense spared, providing utter luxury on the picturesque River Deben. Over 110 years old, measuring 64 feet and painted a striking red, white and black, you can hardly miss this magnificent barge from the shore – but the best is yet to come once you’ve climbed aboard.
Step down into the stunning living quarters and you’ll be amazed at the incredible renovation which has taken place. The large living salon, with seating, dining space and a fully fitted kitchen, feels just like home; in fact, you may be surprised to remember you’re floating on a river! With windows running the length of the saloon, a skylight above, and white wood panelling throughout, the whole room is light, airy, and wonderfully inviting.
The large L-shaped seating area, offers a comfy space for everyone to relax in front of the TV and DVD player – yet also doubles up as a dining area once the bespoke folding table is in situ. Cute floral curtains, a library of books, games and DVDs, and nautical knick-knacks bring a wealth of homely touches to this gorgeous space.
The bespoke kitchen area is perfect for preparing your on-board meals, with handcrafted cabinets by a local furniture maker, opulent granite worktops and a cast iron range cooker in ravishing red. And, alongside tea, coffee and sugar, you’ll find a mouth-watering breakfast hamper on arrival, packed with local bread, butter, eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes.
A corridor leading from the salon takes you to a cosy twin bedroom – perfectly sized for children. Suitable for average sized adults too. Some of the finishing touches add nautical notes, while a TV with DVD player provides perfect entertainment. The beautiful Master cabin is found at the end of the corridor, filled with plenty of natural light from four fabulous portholes, and offering a cosy double bed, plenty of storage, a dressing table, and a TV and DVD player.
You’ll also find a luxurious shower room on board, complete with a full-sized corner shower providing lashings of hot water. There’s also a washbasin, a heated mirror and full-sized loo. Don’t forget to admire the handmade tiles, painted in the Dutch Delft style and depicting Suffolk’s famous avocets, for a unique nod to the local area and Twee Gebroeders’ heritage.
