A fantasy treehouse in an ancient oak tree, set in the North Devon countryside: everything you need to fulfil some long-held childhood dreams.

This is a treehouse on a grand scale, with multiple rooms and all the creature comforts you’ll need for a wonderful escape. Crafted carefully from wood, it looks just right nestled in the huge branches of its 250-year-old oak tree.

You’ll need a head for heights to stay here. To get inside, climb up the wooden staircase, into the rustling leaves. Open the door, and you’ll find yourself inside a light, comfortable and spacious two-bedroom home-from-home.

There is a comfortable living room, complete with sofas and rugs, with a woodburner to keep the treehouse warm. There is an open plan kitchen with everything you’ll need to cook up hearty family meals or tasty treats for two. Large double doors open out onto the deck, where you can eat al-fresco among the branches and birdsong. On cold evenings, cosy up inside on beanbags, in the secret cubbyhole. The rest of the world feels a very long way away up in the trees.

There is a large main bedroom with a large, comfortable kingsize bed. Head down a few steps and you’ll be in the magical second bedroom, perfect for kids. It has built-in wooden bunks and a ladder made of branches.

The bathroom is about much more than just a place to wash. There is a huge, freestanding copper bath in a bay window. Sit back in the bubbles and enjoy the views!

The treehouse is situated in the grounds of the Fox and Hounds hotel – so, when you fancy a drink at the bar, they’re never far away. It makes for the perfect compromise for those who want a special holiday with a difference, but still want hotel facilities close at hand.

More information

You might not want to leave the tree, but if you do, you’ll find yourself in some truly gorgeous countryside. The treehouse lies inside the North Devon biosphere reserve, which is a UNESCO protected area with varied landscapes and lots of wildlife.

The hotel itself has six acres of gardens, which stretch down to the River Taw. Otters and salmon can be seen in the water, and pheasants, owls and woodpeckers in the woods. Deer sometimes pay a visit too. Further afield, long, wild walks can be had on Exmoor and Dartmoor. Or head to the much-celebrated North Devon coast. The seaside town of Barnstaple is within easy reach, as are the long sandy beaches of Saunton Sands and Woolacombe.

Treetops Treehouse is wonderfully designed and built house in the trees, that active families and adventurous couples will adore.
