Spirit yourselves away to a private, protected Greek island that's teeming with diverse nature, a plunge pool fed by the Ionian Sea, and a restored fishing boat to rest your heads.

If you thought taking a romantic break on a private Greek island was the sole province of jet-setting millionaires, it’s time to think again.

Characterful and mesmerising, Nissos Sofiaia is an unspoilt 43-acre island in the Ionian Sea, part of the Echinades islands that are protected for their rich and diverse forms of nature.

Ancient limestone rock formations adorn Sofiaia’s shoreline, while rolling hills and wild cedar trees provide a fascinating setting to both explore, and take welcome shelter from the sun.

You’ll arrive on the island by speedboat from the nearby port of Astakos – a picturesque journey that takes around 15 minutes.

Here, your unique accommodation will be waiting for you… an elegantly restored Samian fishing boat (known as a ‘kaiki’) equipped with everything you’ll need for a true paradise-like escape from life’s hustle and bustle.

Step on board to discover a relaxed open-plan space that features a comfy bed dressed in fresh white linen, and a cosy seating area positioned over glass floors that showcase the kaiki’s former engine bay.

Facilities are covered by an en-suite bathroom with running water, a compost loo, and a gorgeous outdoor shower (trust us: after that first scenic shower, you won’t want to freshen up inside ever again!)

More information

You’ll have a gas stove and a firepit for cooking… and in case you were worried about where you might find supplies on an uninhabited island, there’s no need.

Every day, you will be provided with two ‘provision crates’; one bursting with fresh fruit and vegetables, and a second packed with delicious holiday essentials – such handmade preserves, pasta, free-range eggs, freshly-baked bread, and of course, aromatic coffee!

As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also receive a cooler filled with local cheeses, cold cuts, and plenty of fresh fish and meat (in other words, you can feast like royalty during your stay here.)

With every holiday need so generously covered, all that’s left for you to do is pour a drink and gaze across that shimmering sea towards the mountains beyond, chatting and laughing with your loved one without another soul to disturb you.

If you’re in the mood to explore, you can arrange a boat trip to the neighbouring islands… though with that plunge pool looking so inviting, and a fluffy robe to wrap up in after another heavenly swim, you may find you’re happy just where you are.

Things to note

There are no beaches on the island due to its rocky formation, but there are plenty of diving spots and man-made steps down to the sea for swimming. Portable Wi-Fi is available.
